Buzzards Fans Continue High Attendance

November 25, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
El Paso Buzzards News Release

In a rematch of the first round of the 2002 PresidentÂ’s Cup playoffs, 4,447 of El PasoÂ’s faithful saw a fantastic game as the Buzzards lost a heartbreaker to the Odessa Jackalopes 2-1 Saturday at the El Paso County Coliseum. It was a difficult loss for the Buzzards who rebounded from a 10-1 loss against New Mexico on Friday and played hard against OdessaÂ’s neutral zone trap. Wearing their black road jerseys to the delight of the fans, the Buzzards scored with a fantastic mid-air redirection goal by center Joe Gray at 15:40 in the second period. GrayÂ’s goal was his third of the year and was assisted by defenseman Jeff Potter and right winger Derek Reynolds. BuzzardsÂ’ goaltender Matt Carmichael played an outstanding game, stopping 27 shots. The loss drops the Buzzards to 4-12-1 overall, 3-7-0 at home and was their eighth loss in a row.

BUZZARDS RING IN THE HOLIDAYS FOR CHARITY

Instead of hockey sticks and helmets, the Buzzards used Christmas carols and Santa hats to ring in the holidays and help out local charities. The Buzzards sang Christmas carols, met with fans, signed autographs and took pictures at Sunday’s “An Evening of Giving” charity event at El Paso’s Sunland Park Mall. The event kicked off the holiday shopping season by allowing shoppers to make gift purchases after regular mall hours and without the fuss of packed stores. Tickets to the event were sold by local charities with more than 70 groups benefiting from the proceeds. The Buzzards caravanned around the mall, donning their white home jerseys and Santa hats, singing Christmas carols such as “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “Silent Night” and “Feliz Navidad.” Shoppers said the Buzzards were the most entertaining act with their singing and interaction with fans.
