Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI ¡V The Traverse City Beach Bums made it three straight walk-off wins by besting the Midwest Sliders 2-1 in 11 innings on Monday night for their third consecutive victory.
For the third straight evening a different hero stepped up as Jake Whitesides provided the winning hit in the bottom of the 11th inning. With the score tied at 1-1, Patrick Perry led off the 11th with a double off of Midwest reliever Ryan Myers. Brad Miller sacrificed him to third and Midwest opted to pitch to Whitesides with first base open. Whitesides drove a 2-1 pitch up the first base line and over the shoulder of first baseman Bryan Vickers to score pinch-runner Mike Goetz and provide Traverse City with their third straight walk-off win.
The contest was a pitcher¡¦s duel with the aces of each team battling pitch-for-pitch. Kyle Kearcher threw eight innings for the Sliders and allowed only one run, in the bottom of the eighth. Steve Young began the frame with a bunt single, stole second, and scored on a two-out hit by Zack Kalter to give Traverse City a 1-0 edge.
David Nathanson was on cruise control in his return to the Beach Bums rotation. Nathanson missed his last scheduled start with a back injury but tossed a career high nine innings in his first start since July 18. After Zack Pace singled with two outs in the third, Nathanson retired 18 straight hitters until there were two outs in the ninth.
Jonnie Knoble singled to snap the streak and scored the tying run from first when Zack Kalter was unable to corral a sinking liner off the bat of Miguel Magrass. The ball skipped over his shoulder enabling Knoble to score the tying run. Nathanson was the Beach Bums Player of the Game, allowing just the one run on four hits while striking out six. Ted Gjeldum pitched the 10th and left the go ahead run at third while Pete McEneaney threw the 11th to pick up his third win on his 23rd birthday.
Traverse City finished with 11 hits in the contest. Brad Roblin, Mike Epping, Zack Kalter, and Patrick Perry each finished with a pair of hits. Patrick Perry¡¦s single in the bottom of the fourth extended his hitting streak to 12 games, tying him for the longest this season by a Beach Bums player.
