SAUGET, IL-The Windy City Thunderbolts edged the Gateway Grizzlies 5-4 Monday night in front of 4,018 at GCS Ballpark. The loss coupled with a Southern Illinois win drops the Grizzlies back to five games out in the West Division race.
The Grizzlies (31-31) left the bases loaded to end the game. They left 11 runners on base for the game.
The Grizzlies opened the scoring when Kevin House tripled off the center field wall with one out in the first. Charlie Lisk drove him with a two-out single to put the Grizzlies up 1-0.
Windy City (32-29) went up 2-1 with a pair of runs in the second inning.
Stephen Holdren drove in a run in the third to tie the game. Robbie Minor added an RBI double in the fourth to put the Grizzlies back on top 3-2. Windy City took a 4-3 lead with two more runs in the fifth. Michael Campbell singled to drive in a run in the fifth to tie the game at four.
Windy City used three hits to score a run in the seventh and chase Grizzlies starter Derek Blacksher. Blacksher (8-4) went 6.1 innings allowing five runs on nine hits.
Coby Mavroulis added 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Eric Ridener struck out the side in the top of the ninth inning.
The Grizzlies and Thunderbolts will play the rubber match of the three-game series Tuesday night at GCS Ballpark. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
