Gwinnett Stripers News Release

DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls (47-42) broke open a close game with six runs in the bottom of the sixth and handed the Gwinnett Braves (44-45) a 9-2 setback Saturday night in game two of the three-game series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

The Bulls scored early by plating a run in the bottom of the first off Gwinnett starter Alex White (L, 1-2). White stuck out lead-off batter Boog Powell, but the third strike got by catcher Christian Bethancourt enabling Powell to take first base. Nick Franklin walked, and when the next batter Taylor Motter laid down a bunt, a hustling Powell scored all the way from second for a 1-0 Durham lead.

In the top of the third, Gwinnett tied the game at 1-1 as Jose Peraza led off with a double to right-center and scored as Joey Terdoslavich hit a line drive off the arm of Durham starting pitcher Scott Diamond for a double. Diamond was unable to continue and was replaced by C.J. Riefenhauser.

The Bulls grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the fourth as White walked Hak-Ju Lee, who promptly stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Vince Belnome for a 2-1 lead.

The Durham lead grew to 3-1 as Motter walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth, stole second, moved to third on a fly out to center and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Tim Beckham.

The G-Braves trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the sixth as Terdoslavich led off with a long solo homer to right - his first with Gwinnett this season - off Durham reliever Jhan Marinez.

But that would be as close as the G-Braves could get as in the bottom of the sixth, the Bulls unloaded. Durham sent 10 men to the plate in the inning, scoring six runs on six hits for a 9-2 lead.

Lee led off with a double to left and scored on a ground-rule double to right by Belnome for a 4-2 advantage. Powell pounded a double to right scoring Belnome to make it 5-2. Gwinnett replaced White with Carlos Fisher from the bullpen, and he gave up a single to Motter and a walk to J.P. Arencibia to load the bases. Beckham followed with a single to right, plating Powell and Motter to raise the Bulls' lead to 7-2. A throwing error on the play by Peraza enabled Arencibia to score from third, pushing the lead to 8-2. Mikie Mahtook capped the scoring with an RBI single to center scoring Beckham.

White suffered the loss by going 5.1 innings with five hits, six earned runs, five walks and five strikeouts. Fisher pitched 0.2 innings with three hits, three runs (two earned), one walk and two strikeouts. Mitch Lambson finished the game for Gwinnett with 2.0 innings, one walk and five strikeouts.

Diamond worked 2.2 innings before the injury with four hits, one earned run and three strikeouts. Riefenhauser (W, 2-2) pitched 1.2 innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Marinez went 2.2 innings with three hits, one earned run, two walks and one strikeout. Everett Teaford worked 2.0 innings with one hit and two strikeouts.

Beckham was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs to lead Durham. Powell also went 2-for-4, scoring twice and recording one RBI.

Gwinnett will start right-hander Kanekoa Texeira (0-3, 3.89 ERA), while Durham will counter with right-hander Matt Andriese (1-0, 2.88 ERA).
