Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Buffalo, N.Y. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) rallied from a four-run hole, but saw the Buffalo Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays) push home the difference-making run in a 5-4 final at Coca-Cola Field on Saturday night. SWB (47-44) suffered its 13th loss in 17 games while Buffalo (45-45) has won eight of 11.
Buffalo's Luke Scott singled home Melky Mesa for a 1-0 margin in the opening inning. A run-scoring groundout by Caleb Gindl and an Austin Romine passed ball led to two more runs in the fourth against fill-in starter Diego Moreno.
Reliever Jose Ramirez surrendered an unearned run in the fifth on Andy Burns' double, but the RailRiders rallied against Buffalo starter Matt Boyd with a four-run sixth.
Boyd, who retired the first 11 men he faced, gave up all four runs on homers in the sixth. Ramon Flores launched a three-run job to right, his seventh, while Greg Bird bashed his first career Triple-A home run to right two batters later.
IL All-Star Matt Hague singled Burns home in the seventh against Branden Pinder (0-3) for the game-winning tally. The run went unearned due to a passed ball earlier in the frame.
Buffalo's Joel Pineiro (1-1) got the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief while Bobby Korecky retired the lone man he faced for his sixth save.
The three-game series concludes at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday. Right-hander Luis Severino (4-0, 1.99) gets the nod against southpaw Daniel Norris (2-8, 3.62). The RailRiders will give away a special copy of Yankees Magazine to the first 2,500 fans in attendance on Friday, July 24, when the team hosts the Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers).
