Bullpen gets a boost with return of DeLoizaga-Carney
August 16, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have reassigned right-handed pitcher Frederic DeLoizaga-Carney to Cedar Rapids from Rancho Cucamonga of the California League. The move was announced earlier today by Angels' Director of Player Development Tony Reagins.
A hard thrower with an arsenal of pitches at his disposal, DeLoizaga-Carney started the season on the Kernels' Opening Day roster before being promoted to the Quakes in early June. After working out of a middle relief role early in the season the Littleton, CO, resident assumed the role of closer when Mitch Arnold went on the disabled list in mid-April. DeLoizaga-Carney was stellar for the Kernels, appearing in 16 games and notching seven saves while limiting opposing batters to a .232 average. He had no record with the Kernels and had recorded 19 strikeouts in 19 innings before heading to Rancho Cucamonga.
Unfortunately that success did not follow DeLoizaga-Carney to the California League. In 23 appearances with the Quakes, DeLoizaga-Carney was 1-1 with an 8.91 ERA over 33 1/3 innings of work. Cal League hitters were batting a robust .350 off the righty and his strikeout-to-walk margin was an unhealthy 29-to-22. In his last outing for Rancho Cucamonga on August 14th DeLoizaga-Carney did not factor in the decision after working three innings and striking out five while allowing just one run in an 11-10 extra-inning win over Modesto.
With the return of DeLoizaga-Carney the Kernels' active roster is once again at the Midwest League maximum of 25 active players.
The Kernels continue a four game series with the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays tonight at 7 p.m.
