Snappers strike out 12 as Swing lose, 4-1; Palmer RBI double provides only Swing run

The Swing of the Quad Cities managed only two base hits and the Midwest League's leading strikeout staff sent down 12 Swing hitters on strikes as the Beloit Snappers topped the Swing, 4-1, on Tuesday at Pohlman Field. The Swing were able to push the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth inning, but former Quad City River Bandit Josh Hill struck out Swing pinch hitter Mike Ferris looking to close the door.

After going hitless through the first four innings on Monday night, Quad Cities (65-54, 29-21) scored in the third frame on Tuesday. Casey Rowlett reached on a sharply hit groundball that skipped past Beloit shortstop Trevor Plouffe. Cody Palmer then ripped the first pitch he saw down the left field line, scoring Rowlett with a slide for a 1-0 Swing advantage.

But the Swing did not manage another hit until the ninth inning, as the Snappers' Kyle Aselton was incredibly sharp. The lefthander, who has only pitched in the rotation since mid-July, equaled a season-high with nine strikeouts and allowed only one baserunner - a Chris Patrick walk - through his seven innings of work. Aselton closed his night by retiring the final ten men in a row he faced.

The Snappers tied it up in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tarrence Patterson ripped a double down the left field line to open the inning, and then Deacon Burns tied it up with a gap-splitting double to right-center.

Beloit took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Chris Brown singled up the middle with one out, and then Steve Tolleson dropped a sacrifice bunt down the third base line. Jake Mullinax uncorked a wild throw that sailed past first baseman Nick Stavinoha and lodged in the tarp down the first base line. Brown was granted the plate with the tiebreaking run, and Tolleson was given third base. Tolleson came home to score on a bouncer to short, when Juan Lucena's throw to the plate sailed high and Palmer couldn't get the tag down in time.

The Snappers added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Tolleson tattooed a solo homer over the wall in left-center. Swing reliever Cory Meacham, who had allowed an earned run in only one of his first ten Swing outings, surrendered the blast to Tolleson, his second with the Snappers.

Quad Cities mounted a mini-threat in the ninth inning. Matt Lemanczyk led off the inning with a single to right, only Quad Cities' second hit of the day. Nick Stavinoha reached on a one-out error, and both men moved up on a wild pitch. But Hill fanned Ferris with a low breaking ball to close the door, as the Swing lost for the third time in their last four games.

Swing starter Michael Cooper came up with another strong outing but did not figure in the decision for the Swing, The righty struck out two and walked two while allowing just one run on four hits in five innings. In seven starts for the Swing, Cooper has gone 1-1 with a 3.10 ERA.

Michael Gross was dealt the loss after allowing a pair of unearned runs in two frames of work, while Meacham allowed just the home run while working the eighth.

UP NEXT: The Swing and Snappers continue the series on Wednesday night, when the Swing send supplemental first-rounder Mark McCormick (1-1, 3.04) to the mound against Kevin Slowey (3-0, 2.27), a second-round selection in June's draft. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 and pregame coverage on Progressive Talk AM 1270 to begin at 6:45.

UPCOMING HOMESTAND: The Swing begin their final homestand of the season against Peoria on Friday, August 19. Promotions during the homestand include three fireworks nights, a family fun day, the season's final Hooters/97 Rock Beverage Night, keep Scott County beautiful night, a Swing lunch box giveaway, and Fan Appreciation Day on the final home game of the year.
