Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars scored four of their five runs before the fifth inning on Tuesday night against the West Michigan Whitecaps, and a five-run fifth by the visitor combined for a 10-5 loss in front of 11,576 fans at Elfstrom Stadium.
Down 1-0 in the second, Raul Padron got the Cougars on the board with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly off Andrew Kown, and Gregorio Petit's single made it a 2-1 affair. The Whitecaps answered off Kane County starter Tony Evans with two more in the fourth, but the Cougars had an answer. Padron doubled to score Jose Pineda and later scampered home after a wild pitch for a 4-3 advantage. The difference in the contest was the Whitecaps' five-run fifth against Evans, who left after 4 2/3 innings. He gave up eight runs on 11 hits, walked four and struck out four. The score became 8-3 before reliever Shawn Martinez entered to finish the frame.
Kane County had chances, squandering a lead-off double in the fifth and leaving two in the seventh. West Michigan got two unearned runs in the ninth against Dan Fyvie while the Cougars mustered a tally in their last chance before a double play ended the game. Evans (5-5) returns to .500 after starting out 5-0 with the Cougars (27-25). Kown (7-9) got the win for the Whitecaps (30-22) after five innings of work. Game three of the series is Wednesday night at 6:30 CDT. Joe Scott (3-1, 5.03) takes the mound for Kane County against right-hander Jeff Hahn (2-0, 3.00).
