South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - A basketball coach in Westwood, CA accidentally coined the phrase, "It's nut cuttin' time," explaining to reporters the time was at hand for his basketball team to turn on the switch and begin playing the remainder of the season with a sense of purpose and urgency. One can only imagine that Mark Haley, the South Silver Hawks manager may utter the same words that once came from the mouth of former UCLA men's basketball coach Jim Harrick. As the season winds down and the playoffs approach, purpose and urgency may be the buzz words of the South Bend Silver Hawks.
Tuesday night, the Siler Hawks played well winning their 11th game over their last 14 tries at home in a 10-3 victory over the Peoria Chiefs.
The Peoria Chiefs opened the scoring with two runs crossing the plate in the first inning on a fielding error by Alberto Gonzalez and an RBI triple by Drew Larsen giving Peoria a 2-0 lead. The Hawks got on the board to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning and never looked back.
The Hawks knotted the game on Augie Murillo's sacrifice fly and a Cesar Nicolas run scoring double to center field.
The Hawks took the lead for good in the fourth. With two out in the inning, Augie Murillo walked and scored ahead of Carlos Gonzalez, who cranked his 16th home run of the season to push the Silver Hawks lead to 4-2.
The South Bend lead was stretched in the fifth. With one down, Augie Murillo homered to center field for his 14th this season and a 5-2 lead for the Hawks. Mike Jones replaced Peoria starter Sean Gallagher and he promptly walked Carlos Gonzales and Cesar Nicolas, putting runners at first and second. Wilkin Castillo followed with a single to left loading the bases. After Travis Gulick popped out, Orlando Mercado singled to center pushing Gonzales and Nicolas across the plate for a 7-2 Hawks lead.
South Bend grabbed another couple of runs in the sixth on three hits and its final run in the seventh on two hits to increase its lead to 10-3.
South Bend's Steven Jackson (8-4) picked up the win, while Sean Gallagher (13-5) suffered the loss.
The Silver Hawks (72-50) continue their four game set against the Peoria Chiefs (59-61) at the Cove Wednesday. Koley Kolberg (4-6) will face off against Peoria's Mike Billek (2-0). Wednesday's are Pepsi Wednesday featuring buy one get one free tickets with a Pepsi product proof of purchase. First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM.
