Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING - Tonys Gutierrez connected for a two-run homer in the third inning and Chris Kroski added a solo shot in the eighth inning as the Dayton Dragons(49-73, 19-33) used the long balls and rode a strong pitching performance to snap an eight-game road losing streak as they shutout the Lugnuts(59-62, 22-30) by a 4-0 count on Tuesday night in front of 2,308 fans at Oldsmobile Park.
Danny Core(5-9) was the unfortunate starter for the Lugnuts as his mates managed just four hits on the evening, three by Christian Snavely. In five innings, Core allowed six hits and three runs while fanning five.
The Lugnuts best shot at scoring off Dayton starter Juan Frias(1-4) came in the first inning when the Dragon lefty walked a pair of batters and hit one, but Frias struck out Ryan Klosterman to end the inning and end the threat.
Frias worked five innings as well and allowed just two hits while striking out three to earn his first win of the season for Dayton.
In a scoreless game in the third, Core allowed a leadoff single to Drew Anderson and then could only watch as Cody Strait executed a drag bunt to third perfectly for a hit, a single that moved Anderson to second. After a double steal, Adam Rosales' groundout to second scored Anderson. Gutierrez followed with his 5th homer, a two-run blast that made it 3-0.
Kroski's solo homer with two outs in the eighth inning closed out the scoring. The blast came off Aaron Tressler, the only blemish in four strong relief innings.
The loss by the Lugnuts keeps them five games behind Southwest Michigan in the race for the final wild-card berth in the Eastern Division. With 18 games left, the magic number for the Devil Rays drops to 14.
Lansing hopes to regain the advantage in the series tomorrow evening at 7:05 p.m. as they send left hander A.J. Wideman(6-8) to the hill. Dayton counters with right hander Aaron Garrison(0-0).
