Dayton Dragons News Release
Lansing, MI - The Dayton Dragons (19-33, 49-73) were in need of a boost, something to jumpstart a club that had lost four in a row overall, eight straight on the road and 15 of 16 away from Fifth Third Field. Four Dayton pitchers combined to shutdown and shutout a Lansing Lugnut team (23-30, 59-62), that picked up 11 runs and 10 hits in the series opener on Monday. The Dragons picked up the early lead and held on for a 4-0 win over the Lugnuts in front of 2,388 at Oldsmobile Park.
Monday night's game featured seven combined runs by the two teams in the first inning. Tuesday night's game was scoreless into the third before the Dragons got on the board to open the scoring. Drew Anderson led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on Cody Strait's bunt single. The hit for Strait extended his hitting streak to a Dragons franchise record 19 games. With first and second base, Dayton pulled off the double steal as Anderson and Strait moved up to third and second respectively. Anderson scored on Adam Rosales' RBI ground out for a 1-0 Dayton lead. Tony's Gutierrez gave Dayton a 3-0 lead taking a Danny Core (L, 5-9) offering over the wall in right center for a two run home run, his fifth on the season.
Dragons starter Juan Frias (W, 1-4) made the lead stand up after pitching himself into and out of a jam in the first inning. Lansing loaded the bases against the southpaw in the first inning on a pair of walks and a hit batsman. Frias struck out Ryan Klosterman, who hit a grand slam in the series opener on Monday, to end the inning and the threat. Frias tossed 5.0 innings of two hit shutout baseball with three strike outs, two walks and a hit batsman.
Core pitched through the fifth inning, tossing 5.0 innings of six hit five strikeout baseball with one walk and three earned runs allowed. Core's Achilles Heel all season has been giving up the long ball. The blast by Gutierrez was the league leading 21st served up by the Lansing right hander.
The Dragons extended the advantage to four runs with a Chris Kroski solo shot to right field in the eighth inning. Kroski's sixth of the season and second of the series gave Dayton a 4-0 lead.
The Dragons bullpen made the lead for Frias stand up with three pitchers combining for four shutout innings. Jared Sanders (ND) allowed one hit in a scoreless sixth inning. James Avery (ND) the Reds fifth round selection in the 2005 First Year Player Draft made his Dragons debut Tuesday and tossed 2.0 innings of shut out ball before departing after the bottom of the eighth inning. James Morrison (ND) pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing a single and tossing a 6-4-3 double play ball to keep the shut out in tact.
The Dragons and Lugnuts continue the four game series Wednesday night at Oldsmobile Park. RHP Aaron Garrison will make the start for the Dragons, while Lansing will send LHP A.J. Wideman to the mound. The pre game show begins on 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM at 6:30 PM. Tuesday's day first pitch is slated for 7:05 PM.
