Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (August 16, 2005) ¬" Aaron Jensen and Jason Snyder combined to hold the Burlington Bees (27-25, 61-61) to just three hits as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (29-23, 68-54) evened this series at a game apiece with a 5-0 victory at Community Field tonight. The Bees are shutout for the fifth time this year and the Timber Rattlers pitch their sixth shutout. Wisconsin leads the season series 7-3.
The Timber Rattlers got on the board early on a two-run homer by Yung Chi Chen in the top of the first inning. It was Chen's fifth homer of the year, but his first since June 13th. The Rattlers got two more hits in the inning, including a double by Marshalltown, Iowa native Jeff Clement, but the Bees completed a successful relay to the plate to cut down Matt Tuiasosopo for the final out of the inning. The Rattlers added two more runs against Bees' starter Patrick Hicklen in the top of the fourth. Brandon Green brought in Luis Soto with a sacrifice fly for an unearned run. Soto reached on an error by Ed Lucas at third and moved to third base on Hicklen's wild pickoff attempt. The Bees committed five errors in the game, but only one run was unearned. After a double by Oswaldo Navarro, Brent Johnson singled to right and Navarro slid in just ahead of the throw to the plate to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Rattlers got their final run in the top of the fifth. Tuiasosopo led off with a triple to the wall in right-center field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Clement. After a groundout, Hicklen (6-6) issued his third walk of the game and was removed in favor of Rusty Begnaud. Begnaud, making his first appearance since returning from Idaho Falls, walked the first man he faced on four pitches but got out of the inning and went on to finish the final 4.1 innings without allowing any more runs.
Jensen (8-12) worked seven innings and allowed three hits and three walks while striking out two, throwing a wild pitch, and hitting Brian McFall with a pitch twice. With two more plunkings tonight, McFall now holds the franchise record with 16 for the year, surpassing the old mark of 15 set by Mel Stocker in 2003. Jensen has held the Bees to one run on nine hits in 14 innings and has two wins in his last two starts at Community Field. Snyder allowed just one walk and struck out two in the final two innings.
The Bees and Timber Rattlers continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. A pair of All-Star right-handers will square off as the Bees send Luis Cota (4-6, 3.96) to the mound against Cibney Bello (4-2, 3.92) for the Timber Rattlers. The gates open at 6:00 for a Kids Eat Free Wednesday. All kids 12-and-under that buy a ticket at the ticket window get a coupon for a free hot dog and drink. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
