Bullpen Effort Leads Goldeyes Past Fargo

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (38-27) beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 3-1 at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon.

With first and second and two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Dominic Ficociello reached on an infield single. RedHawks' second baseman TJ Bennett subsequently bobbled the ball, allowing James Harris to score the game's first run from second base.

Winnipeg extended the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Adrian Marin, who was playing for the first time since June 18th, doubled down the right field line with one out. Kevin Garcia came back from an 0-2 count to walk. After Marin stole third base, Tyler Hill ripped a double down the left field line to score Marin. Carlos Garcia followed with a line drive single that broke off the glove of a diving Leobaldo Pina at third base. Kevin Garcia scored Winnipeg's third run on the play.

The RedHawks (41-25) put runners on second and third with one out in the top of the seventh. Alex Perez ranged wide up the middle on a grounder from Bennett before picking the ball up and making an off-balance throw to retire Bennett at first. Devan Ahart scored what proved to be the RedHawks' only run of the afternoon on the RBI groundout.

After Justin Kamplain pitched a scoreless top of the eighth, Victor Capellan pitched a perfect top of the ninth to earn his 21st save.

Joel Bender started for the Goldeyes and pitched three shutout innings. Bender was relieved in the fourth by Christian Torres who also supplied three scoreless frames. Torres (1-0) earned the win.

Ryan Williams (4-1) started for the RedHawks and took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits in five innings. Williams walked one and struck out one.

The Goldeyes open a three-game series on the road against the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Tuesday night. First pitch from US Steel Yard is at 7:10 p.m. All the action can be heard locally on 93.7 FM CJNU and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
