Sioux City Explorers News Release
Sioux City, IA - The Sioux City Explorers began the post Michael Lang era with a victory on Sunday. After an hour rain delay the Explorers got down to business defeating the Texas Airhogs 11-7.
Texas struck first for the second straight game back to back one out singles allowed Javion Randle to drive home the games first run with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Sioux City would tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first however as Kyle Wren lead off the inning with a solo homer to right. A base hit from Dexture McCall and a wild pitch was followed by a ground out to advance McCall to third where he scored on a sacrifice fly from Drew Stankiewicz to give the X's a 2-1 lead. And A double from Sebastian Zawada scored Jose Sermo who reached on a walk to put Sioux City up 3-1.
The X's added four more in the second. Loading the bases on a pair of walks and a single, it was an error by the Texas second baseman allowing the fourth run to score. Sermo doubled to drive home a pair to make it 6-1. And another sacrifice fly from Stankiewicz once again scored McCall to make it 7-1 X's.
Thats all X's starter Andrew Chin (1-0) would need in his second start of the season. He went six innings, allowing four runs, only two being earned on eight hits while striking out three. In his first start against Sioux Falls he walked six batters in three and two-thirds innings, against Texas he did not issue any free passes.
Sioux City added a run in the third on a Kyle Wren single, as Wren was the only Explorer to have a multi hit game. He finished with three hits on the game, two RBI's and three runs scored, ending up just a triple shy of the cycle.
Justin Felix launched the second home run of his career in the fifth to give the X's a 9-2 lead.
Texas' offense would score five times over the final three innings. A pair of ground outs scored two in the seventh. Back to back two out doubles from Matt Dean and Javion Randle brought another run home and RBI singles from Jonathan Moroney and Stewart Ijames in the ninth added another pair of runs for the Airhogs.
But Sioux City kept them at arms length with a pair of runs in the last two innings. Adam Sasser scored Stankiewicz with a single in the eighth and Wren doubled in the ninth and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jeremy Hazelbaker who made his Explorers debut.
Sioux City will look to try and match Fargo-Moorhead for the longest winning streak in the league at 10 games on Monday, as they go for the sweep of Texas at 7:12 pm. Right hander Pete Tago gets the ball for the X's as he will face Zech Lemond of the Airhogs.
