Bullpen Bitten In 7-3 Loss
April 28, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
Until Monday night, the Barnstormers' bullpen had a perfect 0.00 ERA on the season.
York ended the streak rather nastily.
The Revolution erupted for five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning en route to a 7-3 victory over Lancaster in the 2015 War of the Roses Monday evening at Santander Stadium.
It started innocently. Wilson Valdez dribbled a Pete Andrelczyk pitch up the third base line and raced across with an infield single when the Lancaster right-hander could not pick the ball up cleanly.
Manager Butch Hobson went for the left vs. left matchup, utilizing Zach Jackson to face York second baseman Eric Patterson, who already owned two hits on the night. Jackson (0-2) worked ahead in the count, but Patterson drilled a deep liner past Blake Gailen into right center for an RBI triple to tie the game at 3-3.
Jackson departed with the tie intact and runners at the corners with one out. Bryan Pounds greeted Cody Eppley with a fly to shallow left center. Patterson broke for the plate and safely crossed home as Kevin Rivers' throw missed up the first base line and skipped away from Keith Castillo as Andres Perez took second. The Barnstormers issued their second intentional walk of the inning, but Salvador Paniagua continued the scoring with an RBI single to right on a 3-2 offering. Luis De La Cruz followed with a two-run triple into left center for the 7-3 lead.
Lancaster had jumped ahead in the top of the seventh. A walk to Rivers, single by Castillo and intentional free pass to Yusuke Kajimoto loaded the bases with two outs. Tyler Bortnick slapped a single into right field to drive home a pair, giving the Barnstormers their temporary 3-2 lead.
Patterson had scored each of York's first two runs, coming home on an RBI single to left by Pounds in the fourth and a double into the right field corner by Perez in the sixth.
Castillo tied the game in the fifth with an RBI single to right, scoring Henry Wrigley.
Revolution starter Mike McClendon retired the first 13 batters before yielding three hits and a run in the fifth. Chuckie Fick gave up two hits and a run in five innings in his Barnstormers debut and finished his night by striking out the side in his final frame.
Stephen Penney (1-0) picked up the win for York with a hitless eighth inning.
The two clubs continue the series on Tuesday evening. Bryan Evans (0-1) will make the start for Lancaster against former Revs closer Rommie Lewis, who is now in the starting rotation. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:15.
Notes: David Cooper singled to right in the fifth to break up McClendon's no-hit work...Cooper has hit safely in every game...Castillo has batted safely in all three games he has played...Bortnick's two-run single was the team's first official at bat with the bases loaded...Dan Coury had a bases loaded sac fly on Sunday.
