Barnstormers Come Up Short In Ninth

April 28, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Lancaster Barnstormers showed some muscle in the ninth inning on Tuesday evening.

Still, they came up short.

York held onto a 4-2 victory over the Barnstormers at Santander Stadium as Keith Castillo's drive to deep center was hauled in by Brandon Boggs for the final out with a runner standing at third.

The loss was the fifth in six games on Lancaster's season opening road trip.

One-time Barnstormer Brandon Jones crushed a two-run homer to right off Bryan Evans (0-2) in the second to give York an early 2-0 lead. Evans would settle down and allow only two additional runners at first base in his five-inning stint, striking out a team season-high six.

Lancaster got one run back in the third. Lance Zawadzki reached on an error by third baseman Bryan Pounds to open the inning, and Yusuke Kajimoto followed with a single laced into right. Tyler Bortnick moved the runners ahead with a bunt, and Blake Gailen got a run home with a ground out to second.

The Revs put two more on the board against Scott Gracey in the sixth. Andres Perez picked up a four-pitch walk, and Johan Limonta cleared Bortnick with a single to left. Pounds lofted a double down the right field line, scoring one for a 3-1 lead. Following a walk to Jones, Gracey settled in and struck out two, but he allowed an additional run on a force play grounder by Mikey Reynolds.

Until the ninth inning, the Barnstormers had managed only six scattered singles. Brian Cavazos-Galvez ripped a double inside the third base bag. David Cooper was retired on a fly out toward the left field corner, but Henry Wrigley launched a triple deep down the right field line off Stephen Penney to cut the York lead to two. Kevin Rivers struck out for the second out before Castillo's drive to center ended the night.

Rommie Lewis, making his first start in five years, limited Lancaster to five hits and the unearned run in five innings to earn the win. Penney, the winner on Monday evening, recorded his first save of the year.

The two clubs meet again on Wednesday evening. Dan Osterbrock (0-0) gets the nod for the Barnstormers against York veteran Corey Thurman (0-0). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cellphone app, beginning at 6:15.

NOTES: Wrigley joined Kevin Rivers and Tyler Bortnick with three-hit games this season...Lancaster's pitchers struck out 10 overall, the most by the staff this season...Cooper has hit safely in six straight, picking up a single in the sixth inning.
