Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, TEXAS- The Sugar Land Skeeters dropped their third-straight game on Tuesday night, falling 6-3 to the Camden Riversharks. The loss drops the Skeeters to 3-3 on the young season while the Riversharks improve to 4-1.
Sean Gallagher turned in an impressive performance in his second start of the season. The right-hander went 6.0 innings with no hits and no walks. The Boston native only allowed one baserunner in the contest on an error in the second.
Sugar Land scratched across the first run of the ball game in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to quality bunts from the bottom of the order against Riversharks reliever, Eric Kline. Edwin Gomez picked up his first hit in a Skeeters' uniform with a perfectly placed bunt single down the third base line to open up the inning. Amadeo Zazueta executed a perfect sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher and a throwing error by the pitcher allowed Gomez to move up to third with Zazueta at first. Dustin Martin avoided hitting into a double play by legging out a fielder's choice on a grounder to second, but Gomez came in to score to stake the leaders to a 1-0 advantage.
Derrick Loop continued the no-hitter through the seventh by inducing a pair of popups to short before a walk and a strikeout closed out the inning.
Camden picked up their first hits of the ballgame in the top of the eighth off reliever Andrew Johnston. Joel Guzman led off the inning with a double down the line in right and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jeremy Barfield then worked a four-pitch walk. Jose Gil reached on a fielder's choice to third, with Gomez holding the runner. Michael Rockett took Johnston's first offering through the hole in the right side to push across the equalizer. After a popup to first for the second out, Paddy Matera hit a single into right, tailing away from Russo, allowing the go-ahead run to cross the plate.
The Skeeters pushed across the equalizer in the bottom of the eighth. Zazueta singled up the middle to lead off the inning and Beamer Weems singled through the right side to put the go-ahead run on base and force the Riversharks to go to the bullpen. With Danny Herrera on the mound, Delwyn Young worked a walk to load the bases. Travis Scott struck out on Herrera's full count offering for the second out. Denny Almonte roped a single into right, pushing across the tying run, but Weems was thrown out at the plate, trying to give Sugar Land the edge with three outs to play.
Camden responded for a four run ninth off Robbie Weinhardt. Ryan Strieby doubled down the left field line to kick off the inning before coming around to score on a Guzman single into left. Barfield also singled down the line in left to push across Mike Costanzo who walked earlier in the inning. Rockett singled through the right side to plate Guzman and chase Weinhardt from the game.
