'Bugs Stomp Brahmas to End Winless Streak

Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

BOSSIER CITY, LA - David Rutherford ‚¬â„¢s first career hat trick was the highlight of a great night at the CenturyTel Center as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs ended a seven-game winless streak with a 6-2 victory over the rival Texas Brahmas Tuesday. With their long-awaited 22nd win of the season, the 'Bugs improved to 22-17-2 and also broke a four-game winless streak against Texas.

Rutherford's three tallies put him back into a tie for the league lead in goals this year with 26, while Shawn Limpright scored two and assisted on another. Simon Mangos had three assists on the night and James DeLory turned in a "Gordie Howe hat trick" with a goal, an assist and a fight.

The game started off with Mitch Love setting the tone in a fight with the Brahmas ‚¬â„¢ Alex Curran just 24 seconds in. Bossier-Shreveport went on top when Simon Mangos stole a puck at center and gave it to David Rutherford, who drove to the net and backhanded a shot into the top corner at 6:12. The lead became 2-0 when James DeLory buried a centering feed from Shawn Limpright to give the ‚¬ËœBugs a two goal edge after 20 minutes.

The Mudbugs picked up where they left off 38 seconds into the middle frame as the rebound of a Travis Clayton shot deflected off Limpright and into the net, making it a 3-0 lead and sending Texas goaltender Wayne Savage to the bench in favor of Kevin Beech. The Brahmas got on the board when Jason Deitsch snapped a shot into the top corner past John DeCaro, but David Rutherford beat Beech with a slapshot from the high slot only 39 seconds later to regain the three-goal edge for the ‚¬ËœBugs.

A great individual effort from Limpright put Bossier-Shreveport on top 5-1 as he stole a puck at center and sidestepped a check before getting a return feed from DeLory and tallying his second goal of the night with a hard shot low to the glove side. Steven Crampton then sprung Rutherford behind the Texas defense with a nifty pass before #91 deked Beech and deposited his third goal of the night to complete the hat trick in the final minute of the second.

The game turned ugly in the third when an altercation between Crampton and Ross Rouleau led to Mike Sgroi jumping in to fight Crampton at the 5:52 mark, a fracas which resulted in 46 penalty minutes at that stoppage alone. Deitsch scored his second goal of the night on the ensuing powerplay to complete the scoring, but DeLory fought Sean Hurley before the final horn sounded on a 6-2 Mudbugs victory.

John DeCaro (11-7-1) stopped 22 shots to earn his 100th career victory in goal and snap a personal three-game losing skid. Wayne Savage (8-6-2) made 11 saves in 21 minutes before giving way to Beech, who had 13 saves in relief. Bossier-Shreveport outshot Texas 30-24 and converted 2 of 6 powerplay chances. The Brahmas finished 1 for 5 on the PP.

Next up for the ‚¬ËœBugs is a back-to-back set against the Fort Wayne Komets coming up Friday and Saturday at the CenturyTel Center. As the Mudbugs and Komets play their first-ever meetings, Friday night ‚¬â„¢s game will be our MetroPCS "Fans ‚¬â„¢ Choice Charity Night" benefitting Special Olympics of Louisiana and Saturday ‚¬â„¢s contest will be "Hometown Heroes Night", when we recognize the everyday men and women who serve our local communities.
