Buchholz earns his third win - Lowrie extends his on-base streak to 37 straight games

(Akron, OH) - The Sea Dogs pounded out 10 hits and Clay Buchholz (3-2) fired five scoreless innings as they took the series opener from the Akron Aeros, 7-1 on Friday night at Canal Park. Portland improved to 2-2 on their 6-game roadtrip and won a regular season game for the first time in Akron since 2005.
Buchholz lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.56, yielding two first inning singles to Asdrubal Cabrera and Brian Barton. The righty retired 13 of 14 after Barton's single and set down 15 of 18 over five frames. Buchholz recorded only two strikeouts, his lowest total since his first Double-A start on April 10 vs. New Britain. The top pitching prospect in the Red Sox Organization has allowed only one run in his last three starts (0.51 ERA - 17.2 IP/1 ER).
Jake Westbrook (0-1) made his second rehab start and was tagged for five hits and four runs in just 2 and 1/3 innings. Westbrook has been on the Cleveland Indians' disabled list since May 3 with an abdominal strain.
Portland scored four runs on four hits in the first inning off Westbrook. Jeff Natale lined an RBI single on a 2-0 pitch, scoring Jeff Corsaletti, who led off the game with a walk. Eric Crozier followed with a run-scoring single and Cory Keylor added the third run when he hit into a double play. Westbrook fell behind Dusty Brown who ended an 0-for-16 slump with a two-out RBI single.
Jed Lowrie went 2-for-5 with a 2-run triple in the ninth inning. Lowrie singled in the first inning to extend his consecutive on-base streak to 37 straight games - the longest streak in the Eastern League since 2005 (Alex Romero, New Britain - 38 straight).
Lincoln Holdzkom and Beau Vaughan each worked two innings to finish off Portland's 29th win of the season.
The Sea Dogs received a hit from eight of nine starters - Cory Keylor was the lone starter not to reach base.
Saturday night the Sea Dogs and Aeros meet in game two of their weekend series. RHP Michael Bowden (2-1, 2.70) makes the start for Portland against RHP Joe Ness.
Notes...Akron's 6 through 9 hitters went 0-for-13...Eric Crozier is 5-for-11 during the roadtrip...Portland has scored 28 runs during the first four games on 45 hits...Akron had hits in just two innings - 2 in the first and 3 in the sixth.
