New Britain Rock Cats News Release

June 8, 2007, New Britain, CT - New Britain broke out for 17 hits and used two five-run innings to down Bowie 11-8 as Rock Cats' starter Kyle Waldrop picked up his first career Double-A win.

Luke Hughes led the way for the Rock Cats, as he continued his hot streak at the plate with three hits, including two doubles, two runs, and an RBI. Hughes is batting .429 in his last 11 games and his average for the season is now .351. Garrett Guzman also had a big night with three hits, two runs, and four RBI. Felix Molina and Brain Buscher added three hits with a double apiece. Both Molina and Buscher had an RBI and a run.

Waldrop (1-3) wasn't spectacular in the victory, surrendering seven runs on six hits - including two home runs - through six innings. He struck out seven while walking none, but also hit two batters and had a wild pitch.

Bowie jumped out to an early lead off Waldrop. Leadoff batter Oscar Salazar reached base after being hit by a pitch and Jeff Fiorentino followed with a double to center field. Val Majewski (3-for-4, 2 R, 3 RBI) then blasted a three-run shot to center field for a 3-0 BaySox lead.

The Rock Cats cut the score to 3-1 when David Winfree reached base on a throwing error by Salazar and Hughes' double knocked in Winfree. In the bottom of the third, the ‘Cats broke out their bats for a five-run inning. Buscher started the scoring off with an RBI single. Guzman then delivered a three-run homer to center field that put the Rock Cats ahead. Brandon Roberts added an RBI single for a 6-3 Rock Cats' lead.

In the top of the fifth, Waldrop hit Luis Hernandez with a pitch and allowed the runner to advance to second on a wild pitch. Paco Figueroa's single scored Hernandez to cut the Rock Cats lead to 6-4.

The Rock Cats broke out for another five runs in the bottom of the inning, though, to break open the game. Guzman and Winfree started the inning off with back-to-back singles before pitcher Fredy Deza fielded Hughes' sac bunt and threw the ball away. The error allowed Hughes to reach base and Guzman to score. Salazar then committed another error at third that allowed Kyle Geiger to reach first base safely. With the bases loaded, the Bay Sox sent in reliever Felix Romero, who walked in another run. Molina and Trevor Plouffe hit back-to-back RBI singles. Guzman came to the plate again and delivered an RBI single to round out the inning.

Deza (1-5) lasted four innings, allowing 12 hits and 10 runs (7 ER). Eli Whiteside added a three-run homer for Bowie in the sixth inning. For the Rock Cats, J.P. Martinez notched his second save of the season with one run on two hits in three innings of relief.
