Bruins Fall to Penguins 5-4

Wilkes-Barre, PA - The Providence Bruins fell to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 5-4 Saturday evening at The Wachovia Arena. The P-Bruins got goals from Kris Versteeg, Ben Walter, David Krejci, and T.J. Trevelyan.

In the opening period, the P-Bruins took the 1-0 lead at the 3:52 mark. Jonathan Sigalet sent to puck in the zone and when the Penguins tied to clear Bobby Allen held the puck in the zone. When he sent the puck down low, Versteeg picked it up, waited for Penguins netminder Andrew Penner to make a move and then put the puck over his left shoulder and into the net. Wilkes-Barre tied the game at one only 15 seconds into the first power play at the 7:55 mark of the first period. With a pile of players in front of the P-Bruins net Alexei Mikhnov poked the puck in. Tim Wallace and Kyle Brodziak had the assists. The Penguins took their first lead of the game four minutes later at the 11:51 mark. Wade Skolney sent a centering pass to Rob Schremp at the top of the slot and Schremp sent the puck past P-Bruins goaltender Philippe Sauve on his stick side. Noah Welch picked up the second assist as the Penguins went into the first intermission with the 2-1 lead.

In the second period, the P-Bruins tied the game at two at the 3:32 mark. While on the power play, Walter took a pass in front of the net from Versteeg and scored. Sigalet grabbed the second assist. Providence retook the lead at the 6:13 mark, while once again on the man-advantage. This time it was Krejci taking a pass from Pascal Pelletier and he buried the puck past Penner. Once again Sigalet had the second assist. The Penguins tied the game at three while on their own power play. At the 11:09 mark Welch scored with Micki DuPont and Brodziak tallying the assists. The Penguins jumped in front 4-3 at the 14:42 mark with an even strength goal scored by Kurtis McLean. He banked the puck off the crossbar and into the net. Mikhnov and Welch recorded the assists. The Penguins were unable to keep the lead for very long as at the 15:50 mark Trevelyan put home the puck off a rebound from a shot by Walter. Sigalet had the other assist giving him four on the evening. The second period scoring ended with the Penguins retaking the lead with 39.1 seconds left in the period. Tim Wallace scored on a rebound off a shot from former P-Bruin Ryan Glenn. Mikhnov once again had the other assist as the Penguins went into the second intermission with the 5-4 lead.

After a scoreless third period the Penguins held on for the 5-4 victory.

Sauve stopped 20 of 25 shots for the P-Bruins, while Penner made 28 saves for the Penguins. Providence was 2 for 4 on the power play, while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went 2 for 4 on the man-advantage.
