Philadelphia, PA - Chris Minard scored twice to lead the Lowell Devils (17-15-2-1) to a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phantoms (12-19-1-1) at the Wachovia Spectrum Saturday night.
The Devils were on the defensive for much of the first. The Phantoms jumped out to an 8-0 lead in shots on goal, and took the lead on the scoreboard late in the period. Tony Voce scored with just 1:15 remaining on the clock to give Philly the advantage after 20 minutes.
The second period was a different story, however, as Lowell took the lead and held Philadelphia to just four shots on goal. The Devils got on the board while shorthanded early in the second. Tuomas Pihlman potted his third goal of the season, unassisted, at 5:13 of the period, the 10th shorthanded goal allowed by Philadelphia this season. Later, Chris Minard made it 2-1 Lowell with his team-leading 13th goal of the season at 12:08, tucking in his own rebound and giving the Devils their first lead of the road trip.
The Devils didn't waste any time extending the lead in the third. With Petr Nedved in the penalty box for hooking, Minard scored his second of the game and fourth power play goal of the season just 1:06 in to make it 3-1. The Devils took 11 of the first 12 shots of the third period, while Frank Doyle faced the bulk of his work in the opening stanza. The Phantoms pulled G Martin Houle for the extra attacker late, but could get no closer, and Lowell won the first regular season meeting between the two.
The Devils stay on the road against Philadelphia and Norfolk next weekend as well, and return to action at the Tsongas Arena on Friday, January 12th when they host the Phantoms at 7:05 p.m. On Sunday, January 14th they host the Phantoms as well at 2:05 p.m. on Red Sox Day. Meet Wally the Green Monster and win Red Sox prizes throughout the day.
