Scrappy Bears win fifth in a row
December 30, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release
With several regulars either on recall to Washington, injured or out because of the flu, the BEARS gutted out a 7-4 win over the Norfolk Admirals Saturday. The win was HERSHEY'S 24th of the season, and extended the club's lead to three points over second place Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the East Division.
Norfolk would capitalize on a defensive miscue and score on a two on none in front of HERSHEY goaltender Jeff Pietrasiak. Brandon Bochenski scored his 23rd goal of the season from Martin St. Pierre and Troy Brouwer at 7:55 to take a 1-0 lead. The BEARS would rally to tie the game before first intermission when Chad Wiseman scored a short-handed goal at 15:31. The Admirals fired 11 shots at Pietrasiak, while the BEARS picked up eight shots against Norfolk goaltender Corey Crawford in the first twenty minutes.
Joey Tenute opened the scoring in the second period with his ninth goal of the season, and his third in less than 24 hours. The goal at 5:17 of the second gave HERSHEY a 2-1 lead. After Jonas Nordqvist tied the game at 8:27 for Norfolk, Alexandre Giroux scored his 24th goal of the season at 13:30 of the second period from Tomas Fleischmann and Kyle Wilson. Norfolk would find the equalizer at 18:10 when Bochenski scored his second goal of the game. Although HERSHEY had two different one goal leads in the period, the BEARS went to the third tied at 3-3.
Norfolk took a 4-3 lead early in the third when Bochenski scored his third goal of the game just 52 seconds in. The BEARS would then score the final four goals of the game to win going away. Eric Fehr tied the game at 4-4 with his 16th goal of the season at 11:36, and Joey Tenute scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal at 13:30. Wiseman gave the BEARS a two-goal lead at 15:35 at 6-4 with his second of the game and 10th of the season. Giroux scored his second of the night into an empty net at 18:48 to finish off the contest. Pietrasiak, in his first AHL start, made a HERSHEY season high 45 saves to earn his first win.
Notes: Defenseman Shawn Germain was recalled from Reading (ECHL) Saturday and made his AHL debut in the game. The game was the fifth of 10 meetings between the two clubs, with a two game series January 3 and 5 up next in Hampton Roads. The short-handed goal by Wiseman in the first period was HERSHEY'S 15th of the season. Goaltender Daren Machesney, who won his first AHL start for HERSHEY Friday in Albany, was recalled by Washington Saturday and backed up Olie Kolzig.
