March 15, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI -- The Providence Bruins defeated the Springfield Falcons 3-2 in a shootout this evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Justin Florek and Chris Bourque scored in regulation and Chris Bourque scored the winner in the shootout as the Bruins improved to 36-19-0-5.
In a battle for the top spot in the Eastern Conference, the Providence Bruins and Springfield Falcons came out ready to play. The pace was fast throughout the first period, but the Falcons couldn't keep up with the Bruins for long. In a play that started with a beautiful break out and neutral zone transition, Kyle MacKinnon drove to the net and Florek pushed the puck past a sprawling Curtis McElhinney to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 7:47 of the first. Bobby Robins also assisted on the goal.
The Bruins took control of all aspects of the game in the second period. After the Bruins pressured the Falcons' net hard, both teams exchanged some pushes and shoves behind Springfield's net. Robins and Bryan Helmer were assessed with roughing penalties. Despite the four-on-four play, the Bruins thrived and Torey Krug and Bourque made a rush into the Falcons' zone and Krug fed Bourque with a saucer pass over a falling Falcons' defenseman for the one-timer past McElhinney at 4:26. The Falcons had two more power play opportunities, but the Bruins penalty kill (84.6%) was flawless and held the Falcons off the scoreboard.
The Falcons answered back in the third period with two lucky goals. Springfield scored twice within the last five minutes to even the score 2-2 and force an overtime. After a scoreless extra frame, the teams were headed to a shootout to decide the game for the second time in the season series between the teams. Bourque and Svedberg were the heroes in shootout, Bourque scoring the lone goal for the Bruins and Svedberg was flawless as the Bruins got the 3-2 win.
The Bruins return to The Dunk on Sunday, March 17 versus the Manchester Monarchs. The puck drops at 3:05 p.m. for Stadium Cup Day. The first 1,000 fans will receive a free stadium cup courtesy of Cool Air Creations and Countrywide Gold Buyers.
