Brooklyn Comeback Falls Short, Lose 7-5

NORWICH, CT - The Cyclones rallied late but were never able to dig out of an early hole, falling to the Connecticut Tigers 7-5 on Wednesday evening. OF Jacob Zanon had a home run and two-RBI to pace the Brooklyn bats.

RHP Gabriel Llanes(0-1) made the start for Brooklyn and struggled in his second start of the season. The righthander allowed six runs on 10 hits over his 5.0 innings of work, walking one and striking out two. The righthander didn't have his best stuff, but was able to fight his way through the five frames to save the Brooklyn bullpen, which has been taxed by several extra inning contests in the early going.

Trailing 6-0 in the top of the fourth, the Cyclones started their comeback. Colby Woodmansee reached on an error and came around to score on a double to right-centerfield off the bat of Jay Jabs that made it 6-1.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Cyclones sliced into the deficit again in the top of the sixth. Nick Sergakis was hit by a pitch, for the second time in the game and the fourth time this season, to start the threat. After a walk and a long fly ball out from Jay Jabs moved Sergakis to third, the Cyclones second baseman came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jacob Zanon to make the score 6-2.

The Tigers padded their lead in the bottom of the frame, scoring a single run off of Brooklyn relieve Alejandro Castro. That would be the end of the scoring for Connecticut, but the tack on run would prove to be important

In the top of the ninth, the Cyclones mounted a rally thanks to numerous defensive miscues from the Tigers. Jacob Zanon got things started with a one out, solo blast - his first home run as a professional - to make it 7-3. Dan Rizzie followed with an infield single and after Hengelbert Rojas struck out, Dionis Paulino singled to put runners on the corners with two outs. Dale Burdick then reached on an error by Tigers third baseman Josh Lester, which allowed Rizzie to score to make it 7-4. Gene Cone then took advantage of another Tigers error, this time by shortstop Keaton Jones, that pushed another run across and brought the go-ahead run to the plate with two outs. Connecticut reliever Yordy Cabrera was able to end the threat, and the game, by retiring Nick Sergagkis for the final out of the game as the Tigers held on for a 7-5 win.

The Cyclones will look to rebound from the loss when they take on the Tigers in the middle game of the three-game set on Thursday night at 7:05 PM. Harol Gonzalez (0-0, 1.80) will make the start for Brooklyn. The Cyclones will return to Coney Island on Saturday to open a three-game series with the Hudson Valley Renegades.
