State College Spikes News Release

BATAVIA, NY - The State College Spikes stopped their offensive struggles in a big way, racking up 17 hits and getting seven strong innings on the mound from Dailyn Martinez on their way to an 11-1 win over the Batavia Muckdogs on Wednesday night at Dwyer Stadium.

The Spikes (3-3), who had been held without a run for 18 straight innings over the previous two nights, broke open a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fourth. State College piled on from that point, led by a four-hit night from Dylan Tice. The Spikes also received three-hit performances from both Tommy Edman and Vince Jackson, while Tice and Edman reached base five times apiece.

The offensive outburst combined with a stellar start from Martinez (3-3) on the mound. The right-hander logged seven innings and allowed just one unearned run on three hits and a walk. Martinez also struck out six batters as he tossed 102 pitches, 64 of them for strikes.

State College got things going in the first with Tice's RBI single up the middle to start the scoring. Batavia (0-6) then plated its only run in the first when Isaiah White singled, moved to second on an error, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on a Jhonny Santos groundout.

After that, it was all Spikes as Ryan McCarvel and Anthony Ray produced RBI singles in the fourth, followed by Edman's two-run single. McCarvel then drove in a run with a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the fifth, and Bladimil Franco knocked in another with a groundout in the same inning.

In the sixth, Danny Hudzina's run-scoring fielder's choice was followed by a pinch-hit RBI single from Josh Swirchak. The Spike then added a Ray sacrifice fly in the seventh, and Tice capped the scoring with a ninth-inning RBI single for his fourth hit.

Brady Bowen finished off the game with two scoreless innings for State College, yielding one hit while striking out two batters.

Batavia starter Reilly Hovis (0-1) took the loss after giving up five runs on six hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings. Hovis struck out four in the effort.

The Spikes and Muckdogs will meet for the second game of their three-game series on Thursday night at Dwyer Stadium. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will feature right-hander Carson Cross (0-0) on the mound for State College. Cross allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings on Saturday in a no-decision.

Batavia is slated to go with right-hander Ryan McKay (0-1) on the mound.
