
Offense Quiet in Loss to Vermont

The Tri-City ValleyCats scattered eight hits across nine innings, but only managed only two runs off of Lake Monsters pitching as they fell 7-2 to Vermont on Wednesday night.
Akeem Bostick (1-1), pitching in his second rehab start from the Lancaster JetHawks, allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings, striking out five. Three of those runs came on a three-run homerun from Monsters first baseman Miguel Mercedes in the 3rd inning.
The ValleyCats received three hits from Randy Cesar and two from Carmen Benedetti.
The lone pair of runs came in the bottom of the eighth, when Ronnie Dawson popped a ball into shallow left field. The ball went over the head of shortstop Eli White, scoring Alex DeGoti. Centerfielder Stephen Pallares tried to throw out Rodrigo Ayarza going first to third, but overthrew the ball, allowing Ayarza to score on the error.
In the bottom of the ninth trailing by five runs, the 'Cats loaded the bases with no outs, but Jordan Schwartz struck out the next three batters to end the ValleyCats hope of a comeback.
Tri-City left eight men on base to put their season total at 58, which leads the NYPL. They were also 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position on the night.
Heath Bowers (1-1) took the win for Vermont, striking out three and allowing only four baserunners in six innings.
The ValleyCats and Lake Monsters wil play Game 2 of the three game homestand tomorrow night, June 23, at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. First pitch is set for 7 p.m., with Hector Perez getting the ball for the 'Cats, and Dakota Chalmers throwing for Vermont. Thursday is also "Superheroes Night" at "The Joe," and fans are encouraged to wear costumes and capes to the ballpark to join the ValleyCats, who will be wearing superhero-themed jerseys.
