Auburn Doubledays News Release
The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell to the Aberdeen IronBirds, 7-0, on Wednesday evening from Ripkin Stadium. The Doubledays picked up a season-high ten hits, but couldn't knock in a run.
Aberdeen (2-4) scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning off Auburn (4-2) starting pitcher Carlos Acevedo. With one out in the inning, Jaylen Ferguson hit a solo home run to left field to put the IronBirds up 1-0.
The IronBirds added another run in the third inning. With two outs, Alejandro Juvier singled. Austin Hays then tripled to the left-center field gap to score Juvier and give Aberdeen a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Aberdeen extended its lead once again with two outs. Jason Heinrich led off the inning with a single. After back-to-back fly outs to right field, Stuart Levy knocked in Heinrich with a double, and the IronBird went up 3-0.
Aberdeen scored for the fourth straight inning in the bottom of the fifth frame. With one out, Hays singled. Hays advanced to third base on a Ronarsy Ledesma single. Ferguson then flew out, but Hays tagged up and scored from third to put Aberdeen on top, 4-0.
The IronBirds continued to pile up runs in the sixth inning. With one out, Chris Clare singled. After a Levy fly out, Ryan McKenna singled, moving Clare to third base. Clare and McKenna both scored when Juvier doubled to the outfield, and Aberdeen took a 6-0 lead. Hays followed with an infield single. Juvier scored on the play because of an errant throw to first base, which put the IronBirds up, 7-0.
The Doubledays collected a season-high ten hits, led by Daniel Johnson who singled twice and doubled once to pick up three hits in the second professional game of his career.
The Doubledays and IronBirds return to action Thursday night for game two of their three-game series at Ripken Stadium. Left-hander Tyler Watson will make his second start of the season for Auburn. Aberdeen will send left-hander Travis Seabrooke to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
