Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
FISHKILL, NY - A dropped fly ball, the inability to lay down bunts, and leaving runners in scoring position doomed the Renegades as they lost to Lowell 3-2 on Wednesday night at Dutchess Stadium.
Hudson Valley got the scoring started in the second as singles by designated hitter Ryan Boldt and third baseman Jon Popadics put runners at first and second with no one out. After a double steal, Boldt scored on first baseman Kewby Meyer's sacrifice fly to right to give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.
Lowell tied the game in the fifth. With one out, catcher Nick Sciortino doubled then scored on shortstop Carlos Tovar's ensuing double to tie the game at one apiece. The run broke a 22.1 innings scoreless streak for Renegade pitchers.
The Spinners took the lead in the sixth. With two out and no one on second baseman Andy Perez reached on an infield single. He moved to second on a walk, then scored on a single by Tovar who picked up his second RBI of the game and of the season.
Things stayed that way until the Renegades tied it up in the eighth in the oddest of fashions. Leftfielder Miguel Hernandez led off the inning with a walk then moved to second on a sac bunt by shortstop Joseph Astacio. A wild pitch moved Hernandez to third. He then scored when, on a comebacker to pitcher Algenis Martinez, Martinez chose to tag the hitter, rightfielder Angel Perez, instead of throwing to first. As he put the tag on, Martinez fell to the ground, which allowed Hernandez to score from third and tie the game at two.
From there, the bullpens took over as the game stayed tied until 12th when, with one out, Hernandez dropped a fly ball, which put centerfielder Matt McLean at second. After a groundout moved him to third, McLean scored on an infield single to short by designated hitter Tyler Hill to give the Spinners the win.
The Renegades got runners to first and second with no one out in the bottom of the 12th, but a fielder's choice, flyout and strikeout ended Hudson Valley's chances at a comeback.
The tough-luck loser for the Renegades was Brandon Lawson (0-1) who gave up the unearned run in the 12th. The winner for the Spinners was Brad Stone (1-0) who pitched two innings of scoreless relief to get the win.
The Renegades only had four hits on the night, but Perez did extend his hit streak to six with a sixth inning single.
Tovar finished the game with two hits, a double, and two RBI to lead the Spinners. Perez chipped in with two singles and a run for Lowell as well.
On three separate occasions Hudson Valley got a runner to third with one out, but could only manage one run. They also had runners at first and second with no one out two other times, but could not execute bunts and ran themselves out of innings.
Hudson Valley continues their series against Lowell tomorrow for game two of their three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and will be followed by a fireworks show. Righthander Adrian Navas will go for the Renegades against righty Josh Pennington for the Spinners. For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
