Bowers And Offense Lead Vermont To 7-2 Win

TROY, NY - Behind six shutout innings from starter Heath Bowers,three-run Miguel Mercedes home run and Jhonny Rodriguez's three-hit night, the Vermont Lake Monsters opened a three-game series at Tri-City with a 7-2 victory over the ValleyCats in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at Bruno Stadium.

Bowers (1-1) scattered three hits over his six scoreless innings with a walk and three strikeouts to earn his first win of the season. The second-year Lake Monsters right-hander has not allowed an earned run over 10 2/3 innings in his two starts this season.

The Lake Monsters jumped on top in the second inning as Javon Shelby led off with a double and scored one out later on a Nate Mondou RBI groundout. It was the first Vermont at bats for both 2016 draft picks Shelby (fifth-round pick out of Kentucky) and Mondou (13th round out of Wake Forest). Mercedes increased the lead to 4-0 in the third inning with the three-run homer to leftfield, his second home run in last three games.

Vermont added another run in the eighth as Shelby (2-for-3, 2 runs) walked and scored an unearned run on a throwing error later in the inning. The Lake Monsters added two more runs in the ninth including an RBI single from Rodriguez, who went 3-for-5 with two runs, a double and has hit safely in each of Vermont's five games (9-for-25, .360).

Reliever Dustin Driver gave up a pair of runs (one earned) in the eighth, then loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth on two singles and a walk. Jordan Schwartz came on in the tight situation to strikeout the final three batters to secure Vermont's second straight win after four losses to open the season. With just one earned run allowed, the Lake Monsters lowered their team ERA down to 1.77 through five games.

Tri-City starter Aaron Bostick (1-1), who had allowed just two hits over six innings in the ValleyCats season opener, was charged with four runs on eight hits over five innings against the Lake Monsters to take the loss Randy Cesar went 3-for-4 and Carmen Benedetti 2-for-4 for Tri-City (2-4).

Vermont will look to pick up its third straight win when they play the second of a three-game series at Tri-City on Thursday night. Then after the series finale on Friday, the Lake Monsters will open a six-game homestand at historic Centennial Field on Saturday against the Staten Island Yankees.
