Swift Current Broncos News Release
Langley, B.C. - The Swift Current Broncos earned their first win of their B.C. swing on Friday night as they defeated the Vancouver Giants 6-3.
After falling 2-1 to Prince George on Wednesday, the offense came pretty easy it seemed for the Broncos who put six goals by Brett Mirwald on 30 shots. Assistant Coach Tars McEwen said it was good to see pucks go in of Friday that didn't on Saturday.
"Definitely lots to be happy about," McEwen said. "I thought we were really good in the second period, and that's kind of when the game broke loose for us. We had some really good looks. We were doing a lot of the things that we talked about that we weren't doing on Wednesday, some better net presence and getting pucks to the middle and hitting some seams."
The Broncos got the scoring off right as Connor Hvidston's league-leading fifth powerplay goal got them on the board. Although the Giants took the lead after Ty Thorpe scored a powerplay goal and shorthanded goal late in the first and early in the second respectively to give the Giants a 2-1 lead.
After that though, the Broncos took over in the second period with five unanswered goals as Ty Coupland scored twice, and Josh Filmon, Tyson Laventure, and Mathew Ward scored the others to give the Broncos the 6-2 lead after two periods.
For Coupland, it was somewhat of a homecoming as the North Vancouver, B.C. product had numerous friends and family in the stands and scored his first two goals of the season.
"It's really exciting, you love to see when the hometown kid, especially a young kid, coming home, lots of family in the building, they can have success on the ice," McEwen said. "Just really excited and happy for him and his effort."
Reid Dyck was also tremendous in the Swift Current net, stopping 37 of 40 shots he faced for his first win of the season.
The Broncos are now 3-4-1-0 on the year and with visit Victoria on Saturday.
