Wheat Kings Battle Back to Beat Americans

October 14, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

The second night of their 12-day road trip through the United States saw another close game going into the third period for the Brandon Wheat Kings. In that third frame, they showed their resilience and pushed their way to the win.

Jayden Wiens, Dominik Petr, Caleb Hadland, Roger McQueen, and Evan Groening all scored as the Wheat Kings dropped the Tri City Americans 5-2. Carson Bjarnason stopped 29 of 31 shots he faced for his second straight win.

The game didn't start out well on the scoreboard for the Wheat Kings even though they carried the play in the early going. Lukas Dragicevic chased down his own rebound and put the Americans up 1-0, and then their top line worked a give-and-go off the rush, finished off on the right side of the net by Deagan McMillan.

For all that, however, it wasn't a bad first period by the Wheat Kings and they ended it the right way. Jayden Wiens took a feed from Carter Klippenstein and snapped home his third of the season from the bottom of the left circle.

"We kind of maybe gave them a couple there but I thought we played pretty hard in the first," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "It was a big goal by Wiens to cut the deficit in half going into the break, I thought that was huge. I thought we were pretty good."

There was plenty of 4-on-4 play in the second period and the Wheat Kings took advantage. During that time, Petr snuck one through the five-hole on Lukas Matecha who was caught going the wrong way after the shot changed direction.

In the third, the Wheat Kings went into full control. First, off a won faceoff by Anthony Wilson, Hadland grabbed the puck, stepped to the inside and ripped home his fourth. Then, Roger McQueen walked off the goal line and launched the water bottle with a perfect shot from the bottom of the left circle.

Late thrusts by the Americans with the net empty got them no closer, thanks to some timely saves and shot blocks, and Groening took a pass from Petr and deposited it into the empty net to salt away the win.

It's a quick turnaround for the Wheat Kings now. They travel to Spokane to wrap up the weekend with a game against the Chiefs at 6:05 local time, 8:05 Central.
