Broncos Drop Entertaining Affair with Blades

SWIFT CURRENT, SK - The Swift Current Broncos (10-39-1-3) put on a strong performance Saturday night against the Saskatoon Blades (28-22-2-3), ultimately dropping a tightly-contested 6-4 game on home ice.

Saskatoon opened the scoring 1:57 into the game as a pass from the Bronco goal line inadvertently hit another Swift Current stick and deflected to Alex Morozoff who beat Isaac Poulter over the glove.

The Broncos didn't waste much time making up for the turnover as they tied the game less than two minutes later. Kaleb Bulych pinched in from centre to hold the puck in at the Blades line and worked it down the right boards.

Cole Nagy swept it towards the goal line where D-Jay Jerome threw it to the slot for Bulych to fire home a one timer to tie the game.

The Broncos had a lot of zone time in the Blades end in the middle part of the first, cycling the puck well and not allowing the Blades much time with the puck. It eventually resulted in a power play from a high stick off a faceoff in the Blades zone.

It was Saskatoon taking advantage while shorthanded, however. Kyle Crnkovic intercepted a drop pass at centre, got a breakaway and scored his 16th of the year to restore the Blades lead heading into the intermission.

Swift Current responded quickly in the second as D-Jay Jerome hit the highlight reel with a toe-drag move before roofing the puck over Koen MacInnes 1:11 into the second. The goal was his 100th career WHL point.

Saskatoon regained their lead on a two-on-one rush with Randen Schmidt finishing off the play to make it 3-2 7:29 into the period.

Chase Wouters then scored a power-play goal to push the Blades lead to two four minutes later, though the Broncos answered back to make it a one goal game heading to the third.

Nagy forced a turnover on the forecheck and centred for Jerome, who then threw the puck back across the slot with a no-look pass to Jaxan Kaluski who scored his 19th of the season.

Neither team would score until over halfway through the third. After a long shift of cycling in the Broncos zone, Wouters centred for Caiden Daley to one time the 5-3 goal past Poulter.

Bulych scored his second of the game less than two minutes later to make it a one-goal game again, and the Broncos then had their fifth power play of the game to try and tie it up, but couldn't connect on the man advantage.

The Broncos had plenty of zone time with Poulter on the bench for the extra attacker, but Tristen Robins raced through centre and hit the empty net to seal the Blades 6-4 win.

The Broncos now welcome a pair of U.S. Division opponents with the Tri-City Americans in town Wednesday, and the Spokane Chiefs visiting Friday.

Announced attendance was 1,963.
