Everett Bests Portland in Washington

February 16, 2020 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Everett Silvertips slowed down one of the league's hottest offensive teams, beating the Hawks 4-1 on Saturday night at Angel of the Winds Arena.

Both teams scored in the opening period and Everett even found the back of the net on the game's first shot of the night. In the third minute, forward Dawson Butt snapped a wrist shot from the hash marks to give the 'Tips the early 1-0 lead. Portland found its flow a few minutes later and some familiar faces combined for the Hawks opening goal. Seth Jarvis pushed the puck to himself around the Everett defense to spring him and Jaydon Dureau on a 2-on-o zone rush. Dureau put the one-time pass top shelf to tie the game at 1-1.

Everett won the slanted second period, scoring two power play goals and three goals in total to take a 4-1 lead into the second period intermission. The Hawks had a handful of prime scoring chances on their first power play opportunity, but they were unable to shrink the Silvertips lead.

The Hawks had a third period push, out-shooting Everett 12 to 4 in the final frame, but Dustin Wolf was on his game. Wolf turned aside 30 shots and the Silvertips have now only allowed seven goals in their last eight home games. The 'Tips are still seven points back of the division leading Winterhawks even after tonight's 4-1 win.

NOTABLES:

Jaydon Dureau and Seth Jarvis each extended their point streak to five straight games thanks to their first period points.

The Winterhawks return home on Sunday evening for a 5:00 p.m. game against the Moose Jaw Warriors. It's also the Jack in the Box Sunset Game where the VMC arena curtains will be lowered to allow natural sunset into the arena bowl. Portland is 5-0-0-0 this season against East Division opponents.
