Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

an 11-2 loss at Portland's Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The WHL-leading Winterhawks came out hard in the opening period as they looked to establish a quick pace to the game.

Moose Jaw, on the other hand, did a good job matching Portland's speed at times and they were hunting pucks in the offensive zone as they looked to create quality chances of their own.

Portland opened the scoring 2:26 into the game when Nick Cicek took a shot driving down the Warriors right wall.

Under-five minutes later at 7:02, Garrett Wright took a faceoff for the Warriors inside the Portland zone.  He was able to fight the puck away from the Winterhawks and move it back to Owen Hardy, who sniped his team-leading 22nd goal of the season to tie the game at one.

After that, Portland's power-play was the difference for the rest of the period as Moose Jaw prospect Reece Newkirk scored back-to-back goals on the man-advantage to give the Winterhawks a 3-1 lead.

Moose Jaw started the second period on the power-play and was able to generate another good shot on net but they were not able to convert.

Shortly after, the Winterhawks picked up anther power-play, and once again they were able to burn the Warriors as Reece Newkirk scored his hat-trick goal to make it 4-1.

At 4:30, Cross Hanas was credited with Portland's fifth goal when it went off a Warriors stick and over the goal line.  48 seconds later, Seth Jarvis scored to increase the Winterhawks lead.

Portland did not let off the gas pedal for the rest of the period, they added two more goals, including another on the power-play, and took an 8-1 lead into the second intermission.

In the third period, Portland added three more goals before the Warriors picked a late power-play goal from Martin Lang.

Garrett Wright led the Warriors with two assists while Moose Jaw product Reece Newkirk finished with three goals for the Winterhawks.

Moose Jaw was 1-for-3 on the power-play while Portland was 4-for-5.

After Sunday's game, the team travelled to Everett, Washington where they will set up for the next couple of days.

Coming up on Tuesday they head to Kent, Washington to play the Seattle Thunderbirds, and then on Wednesday, they battle the Everett Silvertips.

Both games can be heard on the home of the Warriors, Country 100.
