Swift Current Broncos News Release

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos held their annual general meeting in the upstairs auditorium of the Innovation Credit Union iPlex on September 28, 2021, recapping the 2020-21 season.

The Broncos board of directors and membership elected two new board members: Juan Cabrales and Trevor Marion. The Broncos also thanked outgoing board members Steve Kritzer and Ryan Plewis for their years of dedication and service to the organization.

It was announced that long-time Broncos Governor Al Stewart will be stepping down from his role as Governor. Liam Choo-Foo will be taking over as the Broncos Governor, with Stewart moving into an Alternate Governor role.

The team announced a net loss for the 2020-21 season of $129,968. The Covid-19 pandemic eliminated the club's primary revenue-generating opportunities and required substantial cost control throughout the year.

The 24-game Hub season in Regina was a significant expense to incur, however through careful management of the organization's expenses, and thanks to strong corporate partnership commitments, the Broncos were able to substantially reduce the cost of the Hub season.

The Swift Current Broncos are proud to have supported our former players in their educational pursuits, with a $84,000 paid towards the education of former players.

From the on-ice perspective, the club finished the season with a 6-16-2-0 record during the Hub season. The Hub provided a competitive and safe environment for Broncos players with no cases of Covid-19 in any of the teams within the Hub.

The focus of the shortened season was on development of the team's young players, leading to a commitment to have 13 rookies seeing WHL game action.

The Broncos have signed 14 of the 21 players selected in the 2019 and 2020 WHL Prospects Draft classes, and are in a strong position heading into the 2021 Draft with the sixth and seventh overall selections. It will be the first time since 2017 that the Broncos have their own first-round selection in the draft.

The Broncos selected two players in the 2021 CHL Import Draft, taking German defenceman Rayan Bettahar with the fifth overall pick and Russian forward Alexei Shanaurin 119th overall.
