Bridgeport Islanders News Release

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Mike Halmo scored the only goal of the game 2:35 into overtime and J.F. Berube stopped 26 shots for the shutout, leading the Sound Tigers to a 1-0 victory over the Springfield Falcons Wednesday night at Webster Bank Arena.

Berube and Nicklas Treutle were tested early in the game when both of their respective teams had power plays. For the Falcons it came at 4:22 where they tallied their first three shots on goal.

The Sound Tigers on the other hand looked as if they were on a power play the majority of the first period despite only having one. Their best opportunity came when Treutle misplayed the puck in the corner and it landed in the crease. Somehow the defense was able to knock the puck out of the zone. The period ended with Bridgeport leading in shots 17-6.

The scoreless game almost broke early in the second with an own goal for the Sound Tigers when the puck was misplayed in front of their own net. Thankfully for Bridgeport, Berube was in great position and knocked the puck away.

The second period was fairly even sided with the Sound Tigers tallying 10 shots on net and the Falcons with 11. On their second penalty kill of the night, Bridgeport was able to hold Springfield without a shot on goal.

The best chance of the period for the Falcons came on their second penalty kill where they received a partial breakaway opportunity. Berube was able to stick with the puck and came up with the save.

The pressure continued in a scoreless third period. Bridgeport sent countless shots toward the goal but none got through. Treutle was really tested with eight minutes remaining as he had to be all over the crease to keep the score at zero. A shot by Bracken Kearns appeared to have found a hole but was immediately called no goal by the referee behind the net.

Outshooting the Falcons 39-25 going into overtime, Halmo found the hole the team was looking for all night long. Ryan Pulock took a shot from the bottom of the right faceoff circle and then circled around the net with his own rebound. He connected with the stick of Halmo in the slot where he fired the slap shot home.

Bridgeport tallied a total of 41 shots on goal in tonight's shutout. Both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play tonight.

The Sound Tigers take on the Hartford Wolf Pack Friday night at the XL Center in Hartford looking to continue their win streak. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
