The Sound Tigers lost 2-1 at home to the Binghamton Senators last Monday, tied the Philadelphia Phantoms 1-1 at home Friday, lost 3-1 to the Hershey Bears on the road Saturday and beat Binghamton 1-0 at home Sunday afternoon to earn their first win of the 2003-04 regular season. The Sound Tigers finished the week in fifth place in the East Division with four points and a 1-3-2 record, including 1-2-1 at home and 0-1-1 on the road.
MON OCT 13th vs. BIN, 2-1 L: MARTIN CHABADA scored the Sound Tigers' lone goal. TONY TUZZOLINO and JOSH LANGFELD tallied for Binghamton. DIETER KOCHAN made 19 saves in a losing effort while RAY EMERY made 25 for the win. The Sound Tigers had a 26-21 shots on goal advantage, and both teams were 0 for 6 on the power play.
FRI OCT 17th vs. PHI, 1-1 T: After a scoreless first period, Goaltender DIETER KOCHAN came up with the play of the game denying Philadelphia's KIRBY LAW on a penalty shot mid-way through the second period. It was the first penalty shot against at home in Sound Tigers' history. MARTIN KARIYA made it 1-0 Sound Tigers with a power-play goal, his first-ever goal with the team, 14:08 into the middle frame off a series of pretty passes by JUSTIN MAPLETOFT and MATTIAS TIMANDER. However, the Phantoms tied the game at 1-1 3:36 later on PETER WHITE's power-play goal, the first given up by the Sound Tigers this season, on assists from JOHN SLANEY and KIRBY LAW. Both teams were 1 for 5 on the power play, and Philadelphia had a 32-27 shots on goal advantage marking the first time the Sound Tigers have been outshot this season. Kochan made 31 saves while Philadelphia's NEIL LITTLE made 26.
SAT OCT 18th at HER, 3-1 L: JEFF HAMILTON gave the Sound Tigers a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 13:35 into the game off assists by JUSTIN MAPLETOFT and BRANDON SMITH, but Hershey tied it at 1-1 when GAVIN MORGAN scored inside the final half-minute of the opening frame. The Bears then took their first lead of the contest 8:42 into the third period on a goal by STEVE MOORE and iced the win with an empty-net marker by TRAVIS BRIGLEY at the 19:01 mark. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 2 on the power play, 3 for 3 on the penalty kill and outshot Hershey 27-26. PETER BUDAJ made 26 saves for the Bears while WADE DUBIELEWICZ had 23 for the Sound Tigers.
SUN OCT 19th vs. BIN, 1-0 W: For the second game in a row, JEFF HAMILTON opened the scoring with a power-play goal set up by JUSTIN MAPLETOFT and BRANDON SMITH, doing so with 1:22 left in the first period. DIETER KOCHAN also made 21 saves for his first shutout as a Sound Tiger and the 13th of his professional career. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 2 on the power play, 4 for 4 on the penalty kill and outshot Binghamton 22-21. The loss was the first of the season for the AHL-leading Senators who received a 21-save effort from Goaltender RAY EMERY.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK â C JUSTIN MAPLETOFT
In addition to some inspiring physical play and great work on the penalty kill, especially in Sunday's win, Mapletoft assisted on all four Sound Tigers' goals this week. The Lloydminster, Saskatchewan native ended the week as the team's scoring leader with four assists and five points.
THIS WEEK â Heavy Home Slate Ends vs. Hartford, Road Trip Begins In Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
The Sound Tigers will finish a stretch of five of six games at home when they host the Hartford Wolf Pack at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard this Friday at 7:35 p.m. They will then play the first of five straight road games when they visit the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
FRI OCT 24th vs. HAR, 7:35 p.m.: This will be the second of ten meetings, the first of five in Bridgeport, of the teams this season. The Sound Tigers are 12-7-2 all-time, 0-0-1 this season, versus Hartford who begins this week in third place in the Atlantic Division with six points and a 2-0-1-1 record, including 1-0-0-1 on the road. The Wolf Pack do not play again until Friday.
SAT OCT 25th at WIL, 7:05 p.m.: This will be the first of eight meetings, the first of four in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, of the teams this season. It will also be their first meeting as East Division rivals. The Penguins played in the Western Conference's South Division last year. The Sound Tigers are 2-0 all-time versus Wilkes-Barre/Scranton winning once at home and once on the road in their inaugural season, 2001-02. The Penguins begin this week tied with the Albany River Rats for sixth place in the East Division with two points and a 1-2 record, including 1-1 at home. The Penguins will visit the Norfolk Admirals Wednesday and host Philadelphia Friday.
SOUND TIGERS STREAKS
The Sound Tigers are unbeaten, 1-0-1, in their last two home games. ⢠C JUSTIN MAPLETOFT is on a four-game assist streak (4a). ⢠RW JEFF HAMILTON is on a two-game, power-play-goal-scoring streak (FG,FG-GW). ⢠D BRANDON SMITH is on a two-game assist streak (2a). ⢠The Sound Tigers have scored on the power play in three straight games going 3 for 9 (33.3%) and posting a 1-1-1 record in that time. ⢠The Sound Tigers have not allowed a power-play goal in the last two games going 7 for 7 on the penalty kill and posting a 1-1 record in that time. They have also killed eight straight shorthanded situations including a five-minute major that included two full minutes of a five-on-three advantage Sunday versus Binghamton.
SOUND TIGERS TRANSACTIONS
C PRESTON MIZZI was released from a professional tryout contract on Wednesday, October 15th but was re-signed to one on Friday, October 17th.

The Sound Tigers will hold their first-annual Golf Outing at Tashua Knolls Golf Club this Tuesday at 12 noon. ⢠There will be a Halloween Costume Party presented by Utopia of Norwalk at this Friday's home game versus Hartford with prizes for the best costumes. ⢠The Team Mascot STORM will appear at the Darien Fire House and Cecilia's in Stamford this Sunday, October 26th between 12 noon and 3 p.m. ⢠The Sound Tigers will return from a five-game road trip to play the second of this season's four weekday matinees when they host the Norfolk Admirals on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11th at 4:05 p.m. ⢠November 11th will also be "Military Appreciation Day" at Harbor Yard. ⢠The first 3,000 fans that enter the Sunday, November 16th game at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will receive the first of five Sound Tigers card sets courtesy of Steiner Talent.

Saturday's game at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is subject to pre-emption on WICC by New York Yankees baseball.
