Blue and Gold Pick up Five Points in the Standings

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Admirals finished last week with two wins and a tie against Albany, picking up five points and moving into third place in the East Division. At Pepsi Arena on October 13, the Blue and Gold spoiled the River Rats' home opener with a 4-2 victory. On October 17, an Ajay Baines goal in the final minute of regulation gave the Admirals a 3-3 tie against the Rats. The following night, Yorick Treille scored in overtime to lead Norfolk to a 3-2 win over Albany.

Norfolk's homestand continues this week when the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Pittsburgh) visit Scope for the first time this year on Wednesday, October 22 at 7:15 p.m. The Philadelphia Phantoms (Philadelphia) make their first appearance in Hampton Roads this season on Friday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m. The Admirals finish the week on the road at the Hershey Bears (Colorado) on Sunday, October 26 for a 5:00 p.m. faceoff.

THE WEEK AHEAD

Wednesday, October 22...Norfolk vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins...7:15 p.m.

Norfolk split its first two games with Wilkes-Barre, winning the season opener 6-3 on October 8 before dropping a 4-2 decision on October 11. The Penguins sit sixth in the East Division (1-2-0-0). Pittsburgh's farm club is ranked 24th on the power play, scoring just once in 20 tries (5.00) and ranked last on the penalty kill, having allowed seven power play tallies in 19 opportunities (63.16). With 83 penalty minutes so far, the Pens are averaging 27.7 PIM per game, fourth-most in the AHL. Tomas Surovy leads the squad with three goals and has scored in each of Wilkes-Barre's three games. He shares the team-lead in points with Tom Kostopoulos (2+1) and Michal Sivek (1+2). Kostopoulos has the Pens' lone power play tally, and his 19 PIM are most on the team. Colby Armstrong and Ross Lupaschuk both have a plus-3 rating to lead the club, while Kris Beech has the only minus rating at minus-1. Minding the cage for the Penguins are Andy Chiodo (1-0-0, 2.54 GAA, .931 spct.) and Martin Brochu (0-1-0, 9.47 GAA, .750 spct.).

Saturday, October 25...Norfolk vs. Philadelphia Phantoms...7:30 p.m.

The Phantoms defeated the Admirals 3-0 in their first meeting this year on October 12. Norfolk holds a 15-11-1-2 advantage in the all-time series against Philadelphia. The Phantoms are currently fourth in the East Division (2-2-1-1, six points). Their special teams are ranked 20th with the man-advantage (2-26, 7.69) and 15th in penalty killing (28-33, 84.85). Philadelphia is fourth in the AHL in shots allowed per game (25.33). Former Admiral Peter White has the most goals on the team (three) and with five points (two assists), he is tied with Patrick Sharp (2+3) for the club lead in points. Mike Peluso has one goal (one point) in three games played. Peter Vandermeer has 16 PIM to top the Phantoms in PIM. Several players have the best rating at plus-3 while Ian McNeil's minus-3 is the lowest rating on the team. In net, Neil Little is 2-2-0 with a 1.77 GAA and a .935 spct. in four games while Antero Niittymaki is 0-1-1 with a 1.42 spct. and a .930 spct. in two appearances. They both rank among the top 15 AHL goalies in GAA.

Sunday, October 26...Norfolk @ Hershey Bears...5:00 p.m.

The Admirals edged out the Bears in their season series last year, posting a record of 4-3-3-0 against their divisional foes. Norfolk is 15-7-4-2 all-time in regular season play against Hershey. The Bears are second in the East Division (first - Binghamton, 5-1-0-0, 10 points), and are undefeated in five games thus far this year (4-0-1-0, nine points). Hershey 's power play unit is fourth in the League (5-21, 23.81) while its penalty killers are 21st (17-22, 77.27). With 18 goals scored in five games, the Bears lead the AHL in goals per game (3.60). Brad Larsen has 2+4=6 points to sit atop his club's scoring list, and he ranks among the League leaders in points and assists. His plus-seven rating is best on Hershey and ties him with Binghamton's Josh Langfeld for the highest rating in the League. Brett Clark (0+4=4 points) shares the team lead in helpers with Larsen. Several players have three tallies on the Bears. Gavin Morgan tops Hershey with 14 PIM. Between the pipes, Peter Budaj is 3-0-1 with a 2.20 GAA and a .930 spct. His three wins place him third in the AHL in wins. Tom Lawson is 1-0-0 with a 3.00 GAA and a .919 spct.

TEAM NOTEBOOK

* With two wins and a tie against Albany last week, the Admirals improved to 7-1-2-1 all-time against the River Rats.

* The Admirals have the most power play goals in the AHL (nine) and are second in the League with the man-advantage (9-33, 27.3; first - Syracuse, 31.25). Norfolk has allowed just two power play tallies, ranking the team seventh overall in penalty killing (29-31, 93.5).

* RW Yorick Treille scored both of Norfolk's game-winners over Albany (October 13 and 18), tying him with Binghamton's Denis Hamel and Grand Rapids' Kevin Miller for most game-winning goals.

* D Marty Wilford picked up four assists last week, giving him eight on the year. With eight points, he is currently tied with Springfield's Jeff Taffe for second in the League in scoring (first - Fedor Fedorov, 5+5=10 points), and leads all AHL defensemen in scoring. His eight helpers are most in the League as well.

* On October 18, D Duncan Keith scored off a Carsen Germyn rebound. The goal was Keith's first as a pro, and Germyn picked up his first pro point (an assist) on the play.
