BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Oct. 10, 2015) - Christopher Gibson made 26 saves and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers open the season with a victory at home, defeating the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 4-1 on Saturday night at Webster Bank Arena.
Nine minutes into the game the Sound Tigers went down a man when Kirill Petrov was sent to the penalty box for two minutes for tripping. The Sound Tigers didn't let that stop them however, as with 9:12 left in the first period, Bracken Kearns went five hole on Penguins goalie Matt Murray to give Bridgeport the lead.
Gibson started the second period with a huge save, keeping the score 1-0 Sound Tigers. Bridgeport went down another man 3:47 into the second period when Ben Holmstrom went to the penalty box for two minutes for elbowing, but the Penguins took advantage of the power play. Will O'Neill was the one to score the goal, tying the game 1-1.
The Sound Tigers responded just a minute later with their second goal of the night scored by Jesse Graham, bringing the score to 2-1 Sound Tigers. Graham fired a slapshot from the point that also went five hole on Murray.
After a rather uneventful third period, the Sound Tigers scored their third goal of the night. This time, it was Joe Whitney with the score with 3:22 left in the game.
With 2:01 left in the game, Taylor Beck sent a shot on the empty net and scored the fourth and final goal of the night.
Kearns earned first star honors with his tremendous play in tonight's game. The Sound Tigers power play went 0-for-2 while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went 1-for-5.
The Sound Tigers stay at home for their second game of the 2015-16 season tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. against the St. John's IceCaps.
