Daytona Tortugas News Release
VIERA, FL - The Brevard County Manatees (1-6, 24-51) snapped their 11-game losing streak by walking-off the Daytona Tortugas (4-3, 40-36), 7-6, Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium. Ty Washington drove in half of the Tortugas runs as he clubbed a pair of homers for the first time in his career.
For a fifth straight game, Daytona struck first when Ty Washington and Blake Trahan singled to put runners at the corners to start the game. Trahan stole second when an errant throw by Brevard County's catcher Gregory McCall in to center field allowed Washington to score the games first run. Brian O'Grady followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, driving home Trahan for the 2-0 lead.
The Manatees quickly tied the game in their first two innings. Dustin DeMuth launched a home run to right field in the first inning, and a Tejay Antone throwing error in the second allowed Jose Cuas to score from second base on a groundball back to the pitcher.
In the third, Daytona took the lead back on a Washington solo home run to left field. However, Brevard County launched a homer of their own off the bat of Gregory McCall to quickly respond and knot the game at three.
The Tortugas were able to pull away slightly in the fifth when Washington clubbed his second long ball of the game, a two-run shot for the 5-3 lead. It was Washington's third homerun in his last six at-bats.
The Manatees scored single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings. Omar Garcia tripled home McCall in the sixth inning after Aristides Aquino boxed the ball around in the right field corner, cutting the deficit to 5-4.
A half inning later, Gavin LaValley laced a double to right centerfield to plate Trahan, who reached on an error, to give the Tortugas their two run lead back, at 6-4.
However, Brevard County promptly responded, scoring the final three runs of the game. A sacrifice fly from Clint Coulter made it a 6-5 contest in the seventh, before Elvis Rubio played hero and clubbed his fourth homer of the season off RHP Ariel Hernandez (3-1) to stun Daytona in the opening game of the series. Hernandez was brought in with two outs and a runner on-base to face Rubio in an attempt to earn his first save with Daytona.
Antone tossed 5 2/3 innings, allowed four runs, and didn't factor in the decision. Brevard County's RHP Angel Ventura (2-3) notched the win, as he worked five innings of relief and allowed two earned runs.
The two teams now trek to Jackie Robinson Ballpark to wrap up the short, two-game series Thursday. RHP Wendolyn Bautista (1-0, 1.74 ERA) will make the start for the Tortugas while the Manatees counter with RHP Bubba Derby (5-5, 4.10 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:50 with the Chili's Pre-Game Show on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
Notes: It was Washington's first multi-home run game of his career, after going 69 games between home runs...Aquino has now hit safely in 16 straight games and 38 of his last 42 games. Brian O'Grady extended his hitting streak to eight games, while Gavin LaValley extended his to 11...It was the second walk-off loss in the last four games for Daytona...the win snapped Brevard's longest losing streak in more than 12 seasons...Daytona is now 12-2 in their last 14 road games.
