Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
JUPITER, Fla. - The Fort Myers Miracle defeated the Palm Beach Cardinals, 5-3, at Roger Dean Stadium on Wednesday night.
Trey Vavra put the Miracle out front in the first inning with a two-out RBI double. After Cardinals starter retired lead-off man T.J. White, A.J. Murray singled into left field. With Niko Goodrum at the dish, Gomber (5-6) tossed a wild pitch that pushed Murray up to second. Goodrum struck out, but Vavra laced a 2-1 pitch down the left field line and into the corner to score Murray, 1-0.
Fort Myers began to pull away in the fifth. With one out, Brian Navarreto singled on the infield. White and Murray followed with base knocks to load the bags against gomber. Goodrum then hit a slow chopper to the left side hole for an RBI infield hit. Vavra then popped up with the bases still loaded, but Edgar Corcino delivered a two-out RBI hit through the left side to put the Miracle on top, 3-0.
Gomber exited after five innings and Davis Ward entered from the Palm Beach pen in the sixth. Max Murphy led off with single punched down the first base line. Joe Maloney's ground out to short moved Murphy up to second base. Tanner Witt dropped a single into right field to put runners on the corners. Navarreto picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly out to left center as Murphy tagged and scored from third. White then laced a 2-2 pitch from Ward into the gap in left center to drive in Witt, 5-0.
Miracle starter Felix Jorge had gone six scoreless innings before getting touched up in the seventh. A string of 10 in a row retired was disrupted when Jhohan Acevedo reached on an infield hit. Steve Bean then doubled into left center. With runners at second and third, Andrew Sohn singled in a pair of Cardinal runs with a hit into center, 5-2.
Jorge (8-3) exited the game after 6.1 innings with 10 strikeouts, an individual season-high.
Brandon Peterson recorded the final two outs of the seventh, but gave up a run in the eighth on a two-out RBI single from Allen Staton, 5-3.
Todd Van Steensel tossed a scoreless ninth inning and stranded the tying runs in scoring position to earn his fifth save of the season.
The Miracle (38-37, 4-2) complete a three-game road series and go for the sweep of the Cardinals (35-40, 3-4) on Thursday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium. The game is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. Keaton Steele (3-6) is slated to start for the Miracle opposite Jack Flaherty (2-4) for Palm Beach.
