Dunedin Blue Jays News Release

CLEARWATER, FL - The Dunedin Blue Jays (6-1) used some early runs to jump ahead of the Clearwater Threshers (4-3) and win their fifth game in a row, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon. RHP Francisco Rios (W, 4-3) won the battle of the two Rios pitchers, outdueling RHP Yacksel Rios (2-2).

Francisco Rios churned out a quality start for Dunedin, allowing just a solo home run to 1B Kyle Martin over six innings. The Threshers could only muster up four total hits against Dunedin pitching, all charged to Rios who also struck out four. RHP Adonys Cardona and RHP Brad Allen wrapped thing up late with three hitless frames between the two.

The Jays have won ten of their last eleven contests dating back to before the All-Star break. They found themselves in a bases loaded, nobody out situation twice early on, and supplied all of the offense they needed. Dunedin put up four in the third with a single run coming across over the span of four different batters.

Before the Jays scored two more in the fifth inning, home plate umpire J.C. Velez exited the game after taking a foul ball off his right hand. Field umpire Ben Sonntag took over the home plate duties and, for an inning, called the game on his own.

During that span, 3B Emilio Guerrero field out to deep left field with the bases juiced where LF Derek Campbell crashed into the wall while making the catch. As Campbell went down, RF Josh Almonte tagged to score from third, while CF Anthony Alford was able to tag and score from second base.

Up 6-1, the Jays added two more on C Mike Reeves' first home run of the year, a two run shot to right field.

Dunedin and Clearwater will play one more on Thursday night at 7 PM. RHP Justin Shafer toes the rubber for the Jays, while the Threshers send out RHP Luke Leftwich.
