Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland Winterhawks defenseman and team captain Brett Ponich has been selected to play for Team WHL in the 2009 Subway Super Series.

The Subway Super Series is a six-game event in cities across Canada in November, featuring regional teams of Canadian Hockey League All-Stars competing against the Russian National Junior Team. Ponich will suit up for Team WHL on November 25 in Victoria, British Columbia.

Ponich, a second round selection of the St. Louis Blues in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, has one goal and eight assists for nine points through 17 games this season. Ponich will miss the Winterhawks games on November 24 and 25 to play in the tournament.

"I'm tremendously honored to have been selected to represent the WHL in the Subway Super Series," said Ponich. "This will be my first opportunity to play in international competition and I'm excited to join my peers from across the WHL to take on an outstanding Russian team."

"Brett is very deserving of this honor and we're proud he'll be representing the WHL and the Portland Winterhawks," said Winterhawks General Manager and Head Coach Mike Johnston. "Any time our players have the chance to play against international competition it raises their game to a new level."

Team WHL improved their record to 11-1 in six years of competition against the Russian Selects with two victories last year.

Great seats for season tickets and group packages for the 2009-10 season are still available. Call 503-236-HAWK to reserve your spot today.
