Kelowna players named to Team WHL in Subway Super Series

October 29, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Kelowna Rockets News Release

Two Kelowna Rockets and a Kelowna Minor Hockey product will play for Team WHL in the Subway Super Series game in Kelowna on November 26, the Western Hockey League announced on Thursday.

Kelowna Rockets players Tyson Barrie and Brandon McMillan along with Kelowna Minor Hockey product Curtis Hamilton of the Saskatoon Blades were all named to Team WHL that will take on Team Russia November 26 at Prospera Place in Kelowna.

Barrie, a Victoria native, will also play for Team WHL in Victoria on November 25. Rockets head coach Ryan Huska was earlier announced as an assistant coach for the two B.C. games in the series.

The six game Subway Super Series is used by Hockey Canada to evaluate players in advance of the World Junior Hockey Championships over the Christmas holidays. The first two games of the series are hosted by the QMJHL with the OHL hosting games three and four.

"Everyone of these players is hoping to get invited to Team Canada's final evaluation camp in December," said Rockets president/general manager Bruce Hamilton. "How they play in this game dictates whether they get invited."

The 2009 SUBWAY(r) Super Series will take place November 16 - 26 and marks the seventh straight year that teams of CHL All-Stars have competed against Team Russia in preparation for the World Junior Hockey Championships

"This is a special event for our city," said Hamilton. "We wanted to bring this game here for our fans. The great thing is there are people who don't get a chance to come to Rockets games who will be able to get tickets."

Tickets are now on sale to the general public through www.selectyourtickets.com. Game tickets are available at Kelowna's Prospera Place Box Office (250-762-5050) and at Victoria's Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre Box Office (250-220-7777) or visit www.selectyourtickets.com.

Team WHL was selected by a special committee of WHL General Managers along with Al Murray, Hockey Canada's Head Scout for the Canadian National Junior Team, as part of the selection process for the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championships.

"The WHL is fortunate to have so many good players to choose from for the SUBWAY(r) Super Series," commented Willie Desjardins of the Medicine Hat Tigers, who will coach Team WHL and serve as Head Coach for Team Canada. "This is a great opportunity for our players to compete against a very talented Russian team and showcase themselves to Hockey Canada for future International events."
