Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas - It only seemed fitting for Texas forward Matt Pierce to nail his first career hat trick on Cap Night at the NYTEX Sports Centre as the Brahmas defeated Southern Conference rival Laredo Bucks, 5-2 Friday night. The win puts the Brahmas and Bucks in a third place tie in the South.
Texas needed to come out with vengeance and did so when Jordan Cameron drove down to Kevin Desfosses' crease and found daylight, netting his 20th goal of the season as he went top shelf for the 1-0 Brahmas lead. The Brahmas, on the powerplay, looked to have a breakaway when Matt Pierce charged toward the Bucks net and attempted to take a shot before being taken down, calling for penalty shot at the 14:41 mark. Pierce took advantage of his rare penalty shot opportunity when he beat Desfosses for the two goal lead to head into the first intermission.
Laredo came into the second scoring their first of the night on a powerplay one minute into period with unlucky shot number 13. As the sellout crowd at NYTEX began to get rowdy, so did the action on the ice with a multitude of penalties called, including a couple offsetting roughing calls and fights. It was a call on Bucks forward Darryl Smith that put Texas on the powerplay where a pass from Jason Deitsch found Pierce who batted the puck in for his second goal in the game. Minutes later a second round of fisticuffs between Texas tough guy Nathan Perrott and Robin Richards put fight into the Laredo line when Evan Schwabe put Laredo back within one at the 12:56 marker.
Pierce completed the trick in the final period when he took a feed from James Hiebert and Deitsch to send the caps flying onto the ice. With just over five minutes remaining in the game, longtime and former Buck, Hiebert scored a wraparound goal on Desfosses for the 5-2 win. Texas netminder Joe Palmer stopped 28 shots in net for his 12th victory of the year.
Texas will play their third game in as many nights tomorrow night when they host the Rapid City Rush at the NYTEX Sports Centre at 7:05 PM. For ticket information please contact the Brahmas Box Office at (817) 336-4423 or visit www.brahmas.com.
