Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - Daymen Rycroft scored with just 52 seconds remaining as the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees handed the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs a heartbreaking 2-1 loss Friday night at the CenturyTel Center. Rycroft's goal gave the Killer Bees their second win in the season series just a few minutes after the âBugs had tied the game at one.
Brett Smith scored the lone goal for Bossier-Shreveport, who was held to a single tally for the first time since January 23. The Mudbugs put forth a solid 7-for-7 penalty killing effort, but also surrendered a shorthanded goal for the third time in their past four games.
The âBugs looked strong in the first period, killing off one powerplay against and outshooting Rio Grande Valley 10-4 in the first 20 minutes. Andy Franck kept Bossier-Shreveport off the board though and there was no score after one.
The teams traded off unsuccessful powerplays in the second and the game stayed scoreless until the late stages of the period. With the Mudbugs on the man-advantage, John DeCaro stopped a Rycroft shot from the wing before Tom Sawatske knocked in the rebound to put the Killer Bees ahead 1-0 with only 1:37 remaining in the middle frame.
The Mudbugs finally found the back of the net midway through the third period with Rycroft in the penalty box for high-sticking Jeff Kyrzakos. Joe Ori flew down the left wing boards into the Rio Grande Valley zone before dishing the puck out front to Smith, who jammed in his 12th of the season to knot the score at one. The game appeared headed for overtime when Rycroft picked off a pass in the Mudbugs zone and beat DeCaro glove side in the final minute to hand the âBugs their second straight loss.
John DeCaro stopped 21 shots in the loss, while Andy Franck made 25 saves as the Mudbugs outshot the Bees 26-23. Bossier-Shreveport went 1 for 7 on the powerplay.
The two teams will get right back at it tomorrow night at 7:05 pm for the second game of a back-to-back set at the CenturyTel Center.
