Allen Americans News Release

ALLEN, Texas - The playoff-bound Allen Americans rebounded from a road loss last tonight to defeat Mississippi 5-2 tonight at the Allen Event Center. The win advanced Allen's record to 38-15-4 (80 points). An Allen win or a Laredo loss tomorrow will clinch no less than second place in the Southern Conference for the expansion club.

The Americans started the game off right with a goal 44 seconds into the first period. Justin Bowers lit the lamp off a pass from Bruce Graham. Graham extended his point streak to seven games after picking up the assist. Colton Yellow Horn had an opportunity to increase Allen's lead to two on a breakaway with about six minutes remaining in the period, but RiverKings' netminder Tim Boron turned away the shot.

The Americans and RiverKings held each other off the board in the second frame. Americans' backstop Chris Whitley stopped seven shots, while Boron made 10 saves.

The third period was a scoring frenzy for both sides. The Americans left with four goals, while the ‘Kings netted two. Graham and Bowers began the period with back-to-back tallies. Brandon Straub followed that up with a goal sandwiched by two lamplighters from Mississippi's Ryan Held. Captain Jarret Lukin finished the scoring at 14:23 of the last frame to bring the final score to 5-2.

Whitley started in his first game for Allen since returning from his trip to the American Hockey League. While with the Lake Erie Monsters, Whitley earned his first win at hockey's next level in his first appearance. He stopped 37 shots in a 6-5 shootout victory. Tonight, he stopped 20 shots.

Newcomer Tyler Shelast was awarded a penalty shot after his goal was waived off because of a high stick in the third frame. He did not convert on the attempt but still played well in his first game with Allen, getting an assist on Lukin's goal.

Shelast was reassigned by the AHL's Texas Stars. The new forward is in his second full professional season, with experience playing for the AHL's Iowa Stars, Hamilton Bulldogs and Texas Stars. The 25-year-old played four seasons for Michigan Tech prior to his professional career. In 2007-08, his last season there, Shelast scored 16 goals and had 10 assists for 26 points in 39 games. He ranked first on the team in goals, power-play goals (8), shots on goal (114) and was second in points.

The Americans host Mississippi again tomorrow night at 7:30. Fans will receive thundersticks courtesy of Dr. Ross Miller and have the opportunity to get autographs from the players at the post-game meet-and-greet at Boston's Gourmet Pizza in McKinney.
