Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Boston Bruins Alumni defeated the Providence Bruins Alumni 6-4 Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Boston had goals from five different alums, including Dave Shaw, Andy Brickley, Tim Sweeney, Don Sweeney and two from Bob Sweeney. Scoring for Providence was Eric Healey, Brett Harkins, Peter Ferraro and Brendan Walsh.
Boxboro, MA native and 1987 Stanley Cup Finalist B. Sweeney opened the scoring for the Boston alumni at 4:05 of the first frame. Providence alumni goalie made the initial save on Sweeney's slap shot from the slot, but was unable to hold onto the rebound as the puck trickled through his legs and over the goal line. P-Bruins alum Healey answered just over a minute later, moving Boston net minder Bobby Farrelly with a nifty forehand to backhand move. The tie wouldn't last long as the Boston alumni pulled ahead to take a 2-1 lead off a goal from Shaw at 6:37. Guy Larose and Tim Sweeneyassist on the go-ahead goal for Boston. It looked like Providence tied it up midway through the frame, but the goal was waived off. Boston added an insurance goal from Brickley with 22 seconds to play to send the team into the locker room with a 3-1 lead.
The alumni seemed to shake off the rust and get their strides back in the second stanza as the tempo of play was much quicker than the first. P-Bruins alum Harkins brought the squad within one at 6:54 of the second off assists from Ferraro and Jeff Wells. The play went back and forth until the final minute of the frame when Boston regained a two-goal lead off a rocket from T. Sweeney. Bob Beers and Frank Simonetti assisted on the play to send Boston into the final intermission leading by two.
The alumni players started to show just how much fun they were having in the third frame, throwing playful checks and displaying their acting skills. Boston got on the board first off a goal from B. Sweeney at 6:49 to take a 5-2 lead. Just as on previous goals, Providence was quick to answer, when Ferraro found the back of the net off a play from Harkins and Eric Nikulas. The P-Bruins alumni pulled within one at 9:45 when Walsh ripped a snap shot past Farrelly. Mark Cornforth and Brian White assisted on the play. However, with just over two minutes to play Boston's B. Sweeney secured the win with his second of the night, in a performance that was good enough to earn first star honors.
The P-Bruins are back in action next weekend with three games. Providence opens the weekend on Friday at The Dunk versus the Springfield Falconsat 7:05 p.m. for "Dunkin' Donuts Mug Night." Mugs are free to the first 2,000. On Saturday, the club travels to Portland before returning to Rhode Island on Sunday to meet the Connecticut Whale for the first time this season.
