Worcester Sharks News Release
WORCESTER, MA -A night after firing 47 shots on goal in a 2-1 loss to the Monarchs, the sharks added two more for a total of 49 shots but fell again by a single goal in a 3-2 loss to the Providence Bruins in front of 5,402 at the DCU Center on Sunday afternoon.
Benn Ferriero and John McCarthy scored for the Sharks and Harri Sateri made 23 saves in a game that featured 78 penalty minutes. The Sharks finished 1-4-0-1 on their season long six game home stand as they hit the road in Springfield on Wednesday at 7pm.
Worcester came out right where they left off on Saturday night and took a 9-0 shot advantage early in the opening frame but Bruins netminder Anton Khudobin stood tall for Providence. There was no scoring in the first period but there was plenty of rough stuff highlighted by Curt Gogol (4th FM) and Jamie Tardif (1st FM) in a spirited bout inside the Bruins zone at 13:02 during a ten player scrum. The Sharks outshot the Bruins 15-6 in a scoreless first period.
Zach Hamill (6th), fresh off an NHL recall, gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead after he snuck the puck past Harri Sateri at 4:41 at the side of the net after a terrific centering feed from Zach McKelvie. The Sharks tied the score at 1-1 after a great rush and pass by Tommy Wingels at 10:08. Wingels entered the Bruins zone down the right side, centered the puck in front for Mike Connolly and Benn Ferriero (3rd) fired in a loose rebound past Khudobin after an initial save on Connolly's scoring chance. Providence struck again at 18:37, after rookie defenseman Kevan Miller (1st) scored his first pro goal after the Sharks turned the puck over at their own blue line and Miller was left alone in front of the Worcester net. Miller slid a backhand through the pads of Sateri to give the Bruins a 2-1 edge through 40 minutes.
John McCarthy (2nd) tied the score at 2-2 after he was the trailer on a 3-on-2 rush into the Bruins zone and drilled the puck past Khudobin after a great back feed by Benn Ferriero at 9:47. But just 17 seconds later, Carter Camper (4th) deflected a shot from the point by Andrew Bodnarchuk at 10:04 past the glove of Sateri to give the Bruins a 3-2 advantage. The Sharks would pepper the Bruins netminder with 21 shots in the third period but could only muster the one score in the 3-2 loss to Providence.
The Sharks record falls to 5-4-0-2 with 12 points and to 3-4-0-1 at the DCU Center.
